Hi All,

Picked up my 65 plate Cross at the end of April and really pleased with it - it is the 95bhp diesel model which luckily came with a few extras such as the winter and comfort pack, privacy glass and parking sensors!

I bought from a main dealer and the car is registered with a private plate, which I'm not overly keen on, but I was also given the orignal plates too. I understand that if I want to give up the private plate I can pay the DVLA £80 do it online and they issue me with a new plate number. I can then sell the private plate if I choose to. Would this new number in effect be the original 65 plate that came with the car or would a new number be issued for which new plates would haev to be made up? If the latter is the case can I still drive the car with the private plate on until the new plates have been made up and fitted?

thanks.

Hi Dave. It's very simple for you to put the existing private plate back onto retention, provided it's properly registered to your car and the V5 shows you as the keeper at your address. Retention costs £80 as you say and you get back a certificate that you could give or sell to anyone wishing to put that retained number onto their vehicle.

DVLA should put your car back onto its original 65-reg number for which you already have the plates and that's that. Typically takes only a few minutes as it's all online now and very simple. I've done this countless times and I have yet to have my car re-issued with anything other than the original number.

Be wary of a Google search to find the DVLA retention page, as there are many scumbag thieving barstewards out there that use screen-scraping technology to make it look like you're on the official site and then charge you more. This is the correct site as far as I am concerned;

Hi R1NGA,

Thanks for the informative reply and the link to the authentic web site - I had heard of those con artists trying to charge you more. I'll crack on with it and get it sorted!

Thanks again.
