Hi.
I have now lashed up a temporary fitment of the catch tank. If all goes well I'll get some nice alloy pipes made up and a proper bracket for the tank itself.
The main breather pipe was quite oily and the MAP was oily yet again.
I really think this will be a worthwhile modification.

Nothing to do with being rich or not, but just being the best solution IMHO.
After filtering it drain back into the oil-pan with this solution.
So no need to empty out the sludge after some time, just clean the filter and ready to go again.

Looks like a neat solution, two minutes draining the residue though and not returning dirty oil back to the sump to me is just perhaps more sensible.
Each to their own though.

Oil get filtered before that with this solution.
Besides that, where do go with the sludge that "you" drain. ??
Down the toilet. ??
You have to collect it somewhere and the get rid-of it environment friendly.

Back in the sump is a better solution IMHO.

I have a 25 litre barrel I keep for oil changes and I empty it in an oil recycling tank when it's full, done this for years.
TBH I'm more than happy with my little tank, I've all the time in the world to potter about with the car and my other hobbies so it will do fine for me.

Every engine has to breath. The products of combustion and inevitable leaks past the piston rings would pressurise the sump and block if this small amount of pressure wasn't vented. In days gone by the rocker or cam cover would have an oil filler cap with gauze in it and the fumes would be vented to the atmosphere, some cars also has a breather on the side of the block.
Today due to regulations the breather fumes are vented back to the air intake on the throttle body side of the air filter and also a small bypass tube sucks the fumes below the actual throttle flap so the fumes will be burned on tick over.
What also happens is some of the oil from the engine as it splashes around is drawn up the breather pipe and it gets drawn in by the throttle and this collects in the inlet manifold. it will contaminate the MAP, carbon up the inlet valves and if excessive damage the Lambda sensor.
The Catch Tank literally breaks the breather pipe and oil will drip into the tank rather than it getting into the inlet manifold and engine. Both the inlet and outlet on a catch tank don't face each other for this reason, It is possible a tiny amount of oil still could be drawn in but that depends on the catch tank design.
 
Educate me, what's the purpose of this system?
The idea is to prevent oil fumes/mist/vapour being sucked through inlet manifold.
The oil fumes etc could be contaminating the op map sensor causing poor engine running and possibly also being the cause of the op O2 sensor failing.
 
Interestingly I whipped off the air cleaner and gave the throttle body a clean. There was a fair amount of sticky oil residue round about it and now when you lift off the revs die back much quicker, no doubt the flap was sluggish.

I've always had a lot of oily mess around the throttle body, As my engine uses a bit of oil.
I guess this system would address this issue. My only concern would be the MOT.
Would the Catch Can Air Oil Separator effect this?
 
Mine has passed two MOT's with the catch tank with no issues at all.
The thing is though how the engine is using oil? Is it passing the rings or going down the valve seals? On the 1.2 the breather from the cam cover does spat out a little oil and can be sucked into the air filter and also in the little tube that is at manifold underpressure (below the throttle butterfly) so the catch can allows the oil to drip into its can rather than getting sucked into the manifold and carbonizing valve backs and the oiling up the MAP sensor.

Excellent article , been looking at doing this on my 2013 Panda Easy, noticed a collection of oil on the flap, pipes ok . Can I ask which catch tank you fitted ? UK .
