Likes: Cheap tax, goes like rocket, reliable, cheap maintenance and it's like driving turbocharged armchair.

Dislikes: Small fuel tank, thirsty, spec on early cars could have matched late 2014 revised spec, depreciation and fair bit bigger than old model in tight spaces.

Like:

Small on the outside. While the turning circle leaves something to be desired, the exterior dimensions means I rarely have to look far to find a parking spot it will fit in.

4x4 system quite capable considering it's a viscous coupling. While I don't expect it to compete with a Subaru for on road handling and Jeep or Land Rover for off road prowess, it's effective enough that winter driving is more fun that it should be, and exploring uninhabited coves at the beach or dirt paths in the forest during holidays means the car itself adds to the experience of adventure.

Light controls (clutch, steering etc.), and I rather like the high gear lever position (close to the steering wheel). The electric power steering is great in town.

Diesel is quite economical in both fuel consumption and tax bracket. It has enough power to get out of it's own way in the city, and the torque helps on the highway, steep inclines, and off road.

Makes me want to go on adventures because I know it can handle it. This is more of a testament to the car as a whole, as it's just big enough for two people on a long road trip around the coast, or it has enough room for a couple friends if we want to do something spontaneous down town. While I know getting there will be a pain, I want to take this car to places I've never been. It makes me want to prepare a Sunday picnic and bbq, and go have a good time with friends in the middle of nowhere. The drivetrain makes me want to go do stupid things in the snow in winter. The size makes me want to take it into the city knowing I can find parking rather than worry about parking and take public transport. It has "character", as auto journalists love to put it. It's like a flawed but trusted and enjoyable friend or dog. It goads you into doing things with it, even if you didn't want to before you hopped in.

Dislike:

Small on the inside, as in there are cars with similar exterior dimensions that have more interior volume or better interior layouts and ergonomics despite having equal or better crash ratings (so it's not all down to newer cars getting fatter pillars to succeed in crash tests compared to older generations). Don't even get me started on how unnecessarily thick the gear column and dash part is. My knee reminds me every day.

Seats and driving position (ergonomics). The seats lack support, and the driving position is typical of an '80's or '90's Italian car, which most likely used orangutans when designing the ergonomics of seating positions because the steering wheel is always just a bit too far away if you get the pedal placement right, and the pedals are too close if you adjust according to the steering wheel. A telescoping steering column is the simplest and least costly of solutions that should have been available all along.

Noisy. The diesel is agricultural at low speeds, downright offensive at high speeds. Road and wind noise is also quite invasive at high speeds, but that's also coupled with the diesel roar due to the lack of a 6th gear. Coupled with the seats, long journeys are not a strong suit.

Economy. Yes, I wrote that in the likes section as well. Yes, it's economical in it's own right but compared to similar vehicles with similar engines and weights, it's not as good as it should be. A diesel Polo of the same year easily and consistently gets 7-10mpg more under the same conditions despite having more power and torque (and comparing within 30kg of weight) and all that discrepancy can't be down to the 4x4 system. It's also not a common car where I live, so once the warranty runs out the prices for parts, repairs, maintenance is worrisome (but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it).

Value. On an emotional level, it's all worth it. I'll put up with all the flaws because it puts a smile on my face when I least expect it. The economics of it, however, are a different story. While circumstances aren't really comparable because everyone is different, in my circumstances it was (and still is) a terrible value proposition. When I bought it (used), it was the least amount of car for the most amount of money. I bought it anyway, because I've wanted a diesel Panda 4x4 since 2008 but they were never imported here. This is the only one to have ever come up for sale in the country so I jumped on the opportunity. Since I've bought it, the depreciation and state of the national economy means while I probably won't lose money when selling it, I wouldn't be able to buy anything remotely comparable for that amount of money at this point (or in the future). The rarity of it here also means most buyers wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole for fear of out-of-warranty repairs and maintenance. For reference regarding how overpriced it was when I got it in 2014 (at 8000km, extremely low for a 2012 model), I could have bought a nearly new Hyundai i30 (under 5000km, 2014 model, 1.6 diesel auto with all the options ticked), or a slightly more used Suzuki Grand Vitara (40000km, 2010 model, 1.9 diesel), or even split the difference between two vehicles (I could have kept the Twingo I had, and bought another 1.2 Dynamic Panda with the massive sunroof and still under 80000km) with money left to spare. So basically, I sank all the money I had saved into this one car because I really really really wanted it, and now I'm stuck with it. A financially smarter person would probably steer clear considering all the variables, but then again... I'm the sort of guy that would be willing to eat breakfast cereal for a week before the next paycheck if it means I won't miss out on the experience of an epic night out with friends the weekend before. In the words of Forrest Gump, "I am not a smart man". So this part's a bit my own damn fault.

Simplicity

1.3MJ a bit rattly at times, with a peculiar rattle between 3k and 4k
No telescopic steering wheel
No sixth gear
Seats need to be more bucket like but that might make it awkward to get in and out due to the height.
Won't do the claimed mileage but I DON'T CARE :D:D:D (does the same as my old Alfa GT, low 50s)

Love this car to bits and it makes me smile every time I out corner a German, especially the RS4 that I destroyed between Grantown on Spey and Bridge of Brown :devil:
The amount that I can stick in the boot is great. I use a large North Face duffel bag for work and and it drops in to the boot space beautifully with enough room for the case of real ale that I collect every fortnight on the way home from work. All my fishing gear jigsaws in to place perfectly. When my wife and I go on an adventure we have a medium North Face duffel each and there is still room down one side to put the laptop bags.

This little Panda has given me more pleasure than the expensive ones I've had in the past.
I loved my Skoda's the MB being the most idiosyncratic ever but was tremendously endearing and when I did some tuning saw off many so called fast cars.

So I'd put the Panda right up at the top, perfect car for us both with grown up kids and mostly just the two of us.
So please Fiat if you do change this model , keep its charm and practicality and don't forget that it is great transport for those that like to be different and don't have a big fat wallet.

Love the 4x4 ability.

Only one real niggle for me...........no automatic option on the 4x4

Which is why I will probably get rid of mine at about the 3 year mark.
 
18+ years driving Panda's, 3x 141A, 1x169, and now the second Panda 319 with 85 TA engine. ;)

Pro's:
Small cars are Handy in a metropolis, easy to find a parking space.
After some upgrades great fun to drive, and i not even have touch the engine yet. :D

Con's:
Would like more powerful engines, something with 4 cylinders and a turbo.
I could not think about any further con's, i just like Panda's. :D

No viscous coupling on the post 2012 4x4 models - its all done by electronics/hydraulics/clutches. Good thing about this is, if you jack any wheel you can turn it (fairly) freely -- so you can tell there's no unnecessary drag. (Try that on the old model and you couldn't move just one wheel. If you raised all 4 wheels, turning any one woudl make the other three go round too) The less good thing here is that there is more to go wrong - the viscous coupling on the older model 'just worked'.

Oh, likes/dislikes? Mines a 4x4 MJ - Likes: Bigger, more comfortable and feels better screwed together than my 2005 4x4. 'Lugging power' of the MJ at slow speeds. And, 60+ mpg easily achieved (last 8000 miles, 57mpg). Light on tyres and brakes too (just checked brakes today - 48000 miles) and still plenty left at both ends. Dislikes: bit noisy after 60mph, annoying rattle from the dash - worse when the heating is on and the dash is cold! And, because I have the 'posh' interior lights with map/spotlights, nearly no light gets into the back seats.

2 Noise - over 60 mph radio is nearly inaudible
3 Seats - cushions particularly are not very good on long runs
4 Very slow compared with previous 169 and 1.6 D Bravo ( probably a very good thing really!)
5 Fuel tank is to small

Overall though its a Panda and I totally love Pandas. It now has 11 Panda Logos! The driving package is hard to beat overall and I would only change it for a diesel. I am even considering changing it as there is an identical one locally a year older for sensible money. As I visit Manchester quite often I am waiting for the details of discrimination policy before deciding.

The insurance cost of this car is so low I am overall feeling better about the fuel consumption.

I see Hedley's Towing have a Brink / Thule detachable tow bar on ebay today for £159 so I think I am going to order one. All we need then is the safari roof rack to go on the roof bars that are arriving next week and a snorkel kit and we can go off to do the Pan america highway!!!

Anyone know of a track drive kit??

Yeah, my mind went to the previous generation for a moment because I was still thinking about how angry I was that it never came here. Still, for a multi-disc clutch pack and hydraulic actuator it works quite well.

I've also noticed the dark rear seat area, and wonder how hard it could be to parallel wire in another set of dome lights into the headliner for the rear. I sort of also wish the 4x4 and cross got the boot light that pulls out into a flashlight from the Panda Van.

Owned Panda 1.2 Easy for 2 years before upgrading to Tipo

Pro's:

  • Beautiful MPG for petrol engine :D
  • Enjoyable driving through small countryside lanes (where I live)
  • Easy to get around in town and tight spaces
  • Surprising roomy for its size, e.g. carrying long and bulky stuff - No problem with IKEA double bed frame packs earlier this year!
  • £30 road tax
Con's

  • Struggle to pull out or reverse on hills
  • No mirror on sunshade on front passenger (Big minus point for my wife :D) even the driver side has mirror :confused:
  • No side interior lights for driver/front passenger side (main interior light too bright while driving at night)
  • Ride slightly too firm (but great with humps though!)
When I got this car, going from Ford Mondeo MK3, I was expecting the finish inside and outside to be inferior as I was tight on budget & not fussy but it has well exceeded my expections, it was apparent that Fiat has clearly put more thoughts into designing Panda, than Ford has ever done with my Mondeo MK3.

There was so many niggles to list with Ford Mondeo MK3, to start off with a few minor things e.g. tiny screen washer tank (even smaller than Panda's!!), poorer finishing below dashboard/seat than Panda, 2 wipes too many after front screen wash and so on.

I'm not trying pick on Ford but it just shows you how biased the car magazines/review sites out there can be but also because I have purchased my previous cars based on their reviews. :rolleyes:

Having experienced Fiat Panda has given me confidence to get another Fiat - Tipo. (y)

Before this had a Panda Pop 2014.

Likes:

*I personally find the seats really comfortable, while I know some do not.

*Reliability....despite being made by fiat so therefore costing about 37p to make neither gave me much troubles, the first panda had a whistling air intake and a rattle in the wing mirror which were both sorted fairly quickly, the latest one has had a duff battery and a bloody annoying squeak and fade on the front brakes, fixed with new disks and pads, fine ever since. My last one did nearly 90K in 3 years without a hint of the wheels falling off!

*Personality. The queen indoors has a Fiesta Titanium X, I have to admit it's comfortable, quiet, VERY fun in the corners, economical for its engine size, much better screwed together and a subjectivity at least a better overall motor...BUT it doesn't move me. It's a bit like a washing machine, very efficient but I just don't get excited getting behind the wheel. The Panda makes me smile, I often look back at it when I'm going in the house and I enjoy driving it. That counts for a lot.

*Spec. Since I drive the bottom of the range so to speak it may seem odd to be happy about the spec, but I am. I chose the Pop as it had what I wanted and nothing I didn't. I have a multimedia adaptor for my phone, parking sensors (They are official Fiat so I think the dealer ticked some boxes), electric windows and Factory option alloys which didn't cost me a penny. I'm happy with what I have, I think too much detracts from the nature of the Panda which is a fun, inexpensive car which just does what's on the tin, the Ronseal Fiat if you will [emoji106].

*Price. For what you get for your money it's a good deal. Yes the residual value may not be great but I'm planning to run it for at least 5-7 years so I'm not so bothered.

*Driving. I find the panda to be really quite fun. Nimble in town and can hooligan without it falling over. Kind of reminds me of my brothers KA, chuckable and pretty entertaining as long as you know where the limit is.

Dislikes:

*The cup holders. I want to meet the person who designed them and slap him with a can of redbull. Most cans won't stay upright, bottles are pretty much hopeless and I've lost count of the amount of times I've had a bottle of water jammed under my feet.

*Silly costcutting. Yes it's a cheap car, but some things have made me scratch my head. In the Pop you can only open the boot with the key. Come on, would a button under the rear grab handle of been that much of a problem? Being supplied from the factory with a very poor capacity battery is another. My battery recently died but even if it hadn't, I would consider a 300ah unit to be poor, after a few years of wear it wouldn't take much to strand someone on the side of the road with a capacity like that. The carpet quality is pretty crud too, I think without mats it wouldn't take long to knacker it.

*Fiat dealers. When I brought my car the handover was done by the service manager as the salesman who sold me the car and the Sales Manager were on lunch, more annoying when the salesman booked the appointment to see him and do the handover. Basically I did the paperwork and was told where my car was in the car park. Poor.

My experience with warranty work is a little meh too, I had to fight to get my brakes checked and even once they said they were not quite right they refused to do anything about it, when my battery died after 2 years they just said 'wear and tear' and left me stranded and good luck if your like me and keep a eye on the work log when it's been in, booked for a annual body inspection with its service as part of the anti perforation warranty and they didn't bother, said it wasn't needed. It wasn't until I chased them and gave them the email I had from Fiat asking about it that they did so, albeit begrudgingly.

*Tyres. Odd one I know but from the factory it came with some lovely Goodyear Efficientgrips. About as grippy as oil on a tiled floor. The OE Tyres from the factory have a E rating for wet grip and it shows! While you don't know what effect they are having until they are changed I didn't realise the difference until I had Conti Premium Contacts 5 all round and the difference in the wet and on greasy roads is night and day. It doesn't push wide in the corners anymore and fuel economy improved by about 10%. The more you know eh? Prob due to Fiats penny pinching again to be fair.

All in all I love my panda and the complaints are far outstripped by the things I love. Would I have another? Yes and no....simply because I plan to keep this one long term! Even the missus who HATES fiats with a passion enjoys driving it and has put a panda on her list of replacements for when the Fiesta goes this year. Life's too short not to [emoji6]
