Hi i had some down time so i decided to tidy up the rear drums
With some Hammerite smooth streight to rust paint.
 
Looks better, well done for leaving the wheel mounting face clean.

Might like to invest in some axle stands, just in case jack drops. Can be a good idea to place the removed wheel under the car, gets it out of the way, and catches it if it drops.

Great advice. I learned this the hard way 41 years ago!
 
The beetle was my first car too. WSC462 bought for £75. In Gulf Blue and rust!!! Eventually it was quite nice looking with new Running boards and a rear bumper! The mounts though for the bumper had rotted away but my neighbour made up new ones and welded them in place.
I drove it far too hard ignoring the marks on the speedo for the gear changes and eventually one rocker shaft parted company with the head half way through a journey from Motherwell Technical college where I went for day release to home in Irvine. A two cylinder VW 1200 is mighty slow!! I did make it though.
Conversely when I got my Skoda 1000MB Delux in 1974 it's engine and subsequent "proper" Skoda engines were strong and with their double valve springs good for over 7000 rpm with no issues.

Here is a couple of really bad slides I have of the MB which i have scanned terrible quality but no doubt will remind some of the MB.
