General 4x4 squealing rear brakes

General 4x4 squealing rear brakes

My car was due to go in yesterday for the squeaky brakes. Typically, the flaming squeak has gone, so I cancelled.

What is it with Italian vehicles?! Whenever my stop start plays up, it works perfectly for the dealer, now the brakes have fixed themselves, watch them start squealing again next week!

I also have a Vespa that plays up the exact same way. The front hub squeals when the bike is warm. after you stop riding for 10 mins it's fine. Set off again and the squeal is there.
Took it to the dealer 40 miles away, lo and behold, silent.
Get the flaming thing home, bloody squealing is back.
It's been like it since new, and the only time it stopped doing it was at the dealers!
I give up!

Is it a honk or more of a creaky shuddering groan when reversing ( which is what mine does )

I have had this problem since new ( jan 2015 ) Thought it might bed in or go away but its now worse.

Booked in on 29th Jan at Fiat Peterborough. BUT...........they never heard of the vibration damper kit and said they would inspect the brakes and see what needed doing.

So, to pre-empt me having to go back on a second day while waiting for the parts to arrive, I tried to get a part number for this elusive part !!

What a nightmare. Calls to Fiat UK HQ and various departments and nobody has heard of it. Saw that another member here had the work done in Rotherham so took a chance and called them. Unable to speak directly to service dept ( like a covert op ) but someone HAS knowledge of the item required and have promised to contact my local dealer and tell them what part they need.

Hopefully they will order it in and have it ready for the 29th so inspection AND repair can be done on same day.

I am going to insist on a receipt with a part number so I can post it here - maybe save some others the trouble.

Anybody else with noisy brakes can then just book their car in and quote the part number required !!

In the meantime, I would appeal to ANYBODY who has had this "brake vibration damper kit" fitted, to have a look at the receipt and check for a part number. Or call the dealer and ask them what part number was fitted - I am sure you have a right to know what part number was fitted and it would surely help the rest of us !!!

I'd always assumed it was the same issue that I had with my 100HP rear disks from new and for which I posted the solution on the 169 forum. That is to say, the Stainless-Steel anti-rattle spring tabs are not folder back, which allows their edge to be dragged onto the disk surface and produces the squeal.

Can't imagine what 'damper kit' would fit onto the existing caliper..........

My 4x4 was serviced last week and I complained about groaning rear breaks for second time, already been in once for it. I informed dealer that Fiat has a dampening kit for this problem to which they said they had not heard of this and nothing was on the computer about it. They submitted a ticket to Fiat technical who informed them I was correct and they have booked my car in for this Thursday, I believe that they then have to contact the technical department again on the fitting process. I hope this helps and clarify the problem.

Cheers andy

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.....

Just been informed that I have to have my car diagnosed by fiat staff to confirm it requires this fix. Only AFTER this can they contact fiat HQ, get confirmation its covered and THEN order the kit. The diagnosis may take a full day !

I then go back another day for the kit to be fitted. Another day wasted.

So although its done free under warranty i have to waste 2 days.

Oh and i cannot have a courtesy car as dogs not allowed in same !!

Pathethic approach to what should be a part kept on the shelf and a quick job.

My 2015 4x4 is currently with Palmers of Watford for the squealing rear brake problem. They say they haven't heard of any re-call/upgrade for the rear brakes. I have just emailed them the forum thread so they can see the various comments and damper fix. Will let you all know how I get on. Incidentally it also had the dash battery warning light coming on randomly when driving at 50-60mph and a loss of power steering. They found a fault with the alternator and are replacing it, I have always had good service from them previously (on my third panda) so confident they will get it sorted.:)

My dealer says fiat are well versed about the rear brake problem now.....

My 4x4 has gone in this morning and the problem has been confirmed by dealer who has ordered dampening kit, shame Fiat technical are insisting on turning it into a two day task.

Exactly the same here. Serviced yesterday, mentioned noisy brakes reversing, they checked with Fiat, Fiat approved the fix, they've ordered the damper kit and I'll need to go back next week.

Fiat Tech have now approved Palmers to replace the dampers....sounds to me like Fiat are keeping quiet about the fix unless you get a dealer to raise it with them......then all of a sudden they agree to do the fix! Thanks to all who have posted here all very helpful.

The chap who's dealing with me said it only seemed to be 4 wheel drive models (I suppose that could / would include the Cross). That might not be gospel though. Do all the 2wd models have rear disc brakes or drums (I don't know)? Could that account for a higher percentage of 4x4s?

Only the 4x4 models get rear disks, which is where the problem lies.

On the older model the 100HP also had rear disks and the squeal was hence sometimes on there.

I wish someone would post an image of this supposed damper part.........

If there's a part number or technical bulletin from Fiat that would also be great, as my local dealer had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the damper kit, and said they'd check with Fiat but there didn't seem to be anything to do other than "inspect and realign" the rear brake pads, which does nothing to fix the underlying issue.
