I finally figured mine out : you need to be in neutral and handbrake on ! That's just never going to work for me unless I'm stopped dead in some motorway tailback ...
 
I wouldn't use stop start personally.

I'm old school and still believe a turbo should not be spooled up then switched off. Especially not repeatedly.

You dont need the handbrake on - just neutral and stationary. it will only work if the battery is fully charged and the S/S electronics are 100% happy that it has the juice to restart easily.
