General Panda Noise

General Panda Noise

Hello All, I had the same break noise and subsequent nightmare of being told "all pandas sound like this" and a 3 month battle with Fiat customer service. This happened at 2,000 miles. Eventually they replaced rear brakes, someone admitting they were flawed, but I had to write many letters and spend a lot of time to get the original dealer on my side to convince Fiat that the front brakes also needed replacing. In the end FIAT said they would only pay for the parts and that the labour was my cost.
Reading the other comments here- it seems the brake issue on the Panda Antartica 4x4 is common. There is power in numbers, so use this archive when talking to your dealership. Good luck
Here is my sad tale...

This was a new car with only 2000 miles on it-at the time the troubles began.
PurchasedNov 25.2014

1. I took the car to another dealer for a service issue
with front break noise and rear reversing squeaking
clearly stating there were 2 different agendas,
in early March (5th? )and asked them to check front and rear brakes.

2.
They eventually*replaced rear pads, stating that it is known fault in these Pandas!!!
so actually they should have been replaced before selling and perhaps all dealers should have been advised of this issue?
The original dealer was very helpful while I tried to resolve these issues.

I am not certain that the service dealer even looked at the front brakes during the service visit.
After 2 more weeks of easy driving
the front breaks sounded worse
I then had to wait 2 weeks to get an appointment.

3. Finally, after a service drive w a technician, April 10 and me insisting that the*
breaks were bad and pads needed replacing, and him not saying much
I convinced them to have a look. One technician told me all Pandas sound that way!
The result of the inspection-made while I waited ( more time spent again) :
“Discs badly pitted and brake pads worn.
I was then told they need to make some modifications to the front breaks due to wear and corrosion on the discs and I would have to go back again for this

4. I was contacted April 22 and told that yes there was corrosion on the disc pads. They said it is safe to drive, but that this noise, when breaking is caused by the this corrosion and this replacement cost would not be covered under warrantee.

5. I returned to service dealer to collect the car again, on April 24, 2015
I explained to them that I wanted front pads & discs replaced
as I do not think this is correct to have these issues for a new vehicle.
and it is a QC issue. (this is the term to use when talking to FIAT QC=Quality control issue)

The other term to use is GOODWILL, SAY YOU WANT A GOODWILL SETTLEMENT FROM Fiat customer service.

6.A brand new Panda purchased Nov 25, 2014 *with a little more than 2,000 miles has had all brakes replaced*

This has taken up a huge amount of time, with many scheduling repercussions, cost me taxi fares and a substantial amount in phone calls and time
and I do not think it is correct to have these problems with a new car nor did I expect it.

Penguino, with the greatest respect, I would have paid you nothing if I were FIAT.

Your car has just done 2000 miles. That's a very low mileage, frankly an abuse of a car. They need to be used, not standing around especially outside as yours must have done.
Pitting of brake discs is a typical rust issue that only and always occurs on unused cars. I had the same when I had 2 cars, and mine was often not driven for 2-3 weeks. The rusting even led to eneven balance of brakes, which I manged to cure by soem vigorous usage for the MOT. The pitted discs just neede replacement though.
So I believe that either you or the preveious owner are responsible here, chiefly through lack of usage and /or knowledge on how to keep the mechanics in good order. Don't blame FIAT.

On reflection, or the car stood on a forecourt for ages. I walk past typical Arthur Daley car dealers almost daily, and I can see that some of their cars are there for slael for over 5 months. The discs are deeply rusted , and the cars clearly haven't moved for months. It has made me very reluctant to buy a non-used car; I want to know its been run and working regularly, so no old forecourt buys by me ever .

Where did you buy it? And did you test drive it? If already pitted, you should have heard the grinding noise then.

To be fair to Penguino, the car seems to have been bought new in late Nov and taken to the garage in early March with 2000 miles on the clock. At that rate it would be doing 6000-7000 a year.

This sounds like lowish milage but I'd hardly call it an abuse.

Take it easy,
M
