General Alternative to The 4x4 Panda?

It'll be more expensive than the Panda (est from £14,995) but I have a soft spot for something else in the FCA family, namely the Jeep Renegade. As one of the designers said in a promotional video, it looks like a little dog that could roll down a hill, pick itself up, shake of the dust and wag its tail happily.

Yep, I've got my eye on the renegade too when its time to change the 4x4 :)

I thought seriously about a Yeti before buying the 4x4 TA 18 months ago - bit on the big side and the spec I'd want was quite a lot of money, though probably good value if the build quality is what you'd expect.

I'll second that.

The thing is, what is around that is as capable at the same kind of price?

The Suzuki is around the same amount of money but not as capable.

The Renegade in the right spec is very capable, as is the Yeti, but at what cost?

The Panda 4x4 pretty much has a little niche all to itself.

I didn't realise until seeing this month's edition of Quattroruote that the Renegade and the 500X are made on the same production line, in the same plant as the Punto, which all makes sense. Still grates to have that great lump called a Fiat 500.

Before the Fabia vRS I had a Yeti Tdi 140 4x4 Elegance. Excellent car but I never got more than a 45mpg average and often a lot less and I hated the farmer Giles moment when you fired it up first thing in the morning. I never really came to terms with what was my first diseasil. The car I had prior to the Yeti was an imported Alfa 156 GTA with a semi auto box ( not really Selespeed on the GTA) and it was sublime, any Diesel engine was going to struggle in comparison I guess. Summer slicks on the Yeti were useless in snow and I had to fork out for winter tyres to make the most of the Haldex system. In many respects though it's like a giant Panda and a fine car.

Today I was due to take the Cross in for the repair following it's savaging of the Nissan Puke, of course they can't get the parts? good job it's driveable.

I used to have the Dodge Caliber with the 2l VW PD engine, they never brought the 4wd SRT Over, but I did consider the jeep patriot. You just know a jeep will do the job. The later versions use the Benz 2.2 Diesel.

How can this be justified? Beats me.... New Jeep Renegade Trailhawk £27,995. In the USA its 26,000usd (£17373).
Guess I'll stick with my fab Panda

One thing to bear in mind, and I'm trying to remember the full details, is that any vehicle bought in the US, whether new or old, is subject to State tax at time of registration.

We lived in Texas and it was around 6.25%.

One vehicle actually was a Jeep.

You're right.

Specs are generally better here, but it is annoying that we pay more, and best not to get started on the cost of fuel.

I had an Opel Mokka 1.4turbo on holiday for a week. Was actually pleasantly surprised by it, I thought it would be awful judging by the reviews. It's also based on the GP/Corsa platform....
