Hi Everybody.

I've been conducting some trials with My 1.2 14 plate panda regarding this odd power flat spot when pulling off. you may have seen some of the posts in 500 section.

This is what I've found over the last month or so.

The car drives significantly better if the spark plugs are changed from the ones that are fitted at the factory to a new set of either the NGK's or champion's that are quoted in the hand book. (tried both)
I've also tried the ones that my 500 runs on (its an 08 1.2 so has different plugs specified) and they work really well too, however because they are not the specified ones it may cause warranty issues so probably best not to use. for now.

I've checked the long part number on the ones that came with the car and it would seem that its a one plug that covers everything sort of thing???, yet when you look at some of the plugs that they cover there are significant differences, I cannot believe that this one plug can cover the range that they say it does without some compromise. They also look cheap and nasty too.

By changing the plugs, The car now pulls off smoothly and has much better acceleration, I'm now very interested to know if anyone else has found the same?

I did ask Fiat Technical the question but they didn't seem too interested.

Also on another tack I've added an independent air filter to the idle air intake hose so it gets a better and more consistent air supply. This also seems to improve the smoothness of the engine at lower revs as it was feeling like the airflow to the by pass hose was stalling when the throttle opened.

Please feel free to shoot me down in flames (usually happens ;)). but I really would like to know if someone else tries changing the plugs and finds the same.

Cheers

Chris.

There's a joke there about keeping both hands on the wheel... But I will refrain ;-)

Ive only had my panda a few months ..less than 6000m on the clock, but might try the spark plug change.Having previously had a nissan micra since 2001 ,which was uber easy to change the plugs, just how easy is it to change the panda plugs?.I notice they seem to be at the back on the panda fire engine.I currently only notice the flat spot if i let the revs drop below 2000 ,but guess experimenting with new plugs wont hurt.Could you also give some more info on the independent air filter youve added?.
thanks

Hi Ellison

The plugs come out really easy. You need to remove the air filter box, which is three 10mm bolts, Disconnect the small hose from the back of it, (which is the one I've attached its own filter to now, I think I have some photos, and capped off the small spigot on the air filter box with a rubber cap). leave the large hose attached, there is enough movement in this to be able to move the air filter box out of the way.
I used my socket set with the plug socket and an extension to get them out. I think total time too swap them all was 10 minutes.
be gentle in removing the plug caps though some tend to want to stick to the plugs, don't tug on the leads you could damage them.

The Breather filter is one of the small conical types, bought off the dreaded E-bay for about £4 the 9mm connector size if I remember right as it slips nicely over the hose, I also found a small piece of brass pipe about 6mm diameter 20mm long that pushed partly into the end of the hose before fitting the filter to stop the end collapsing. the whole thing secured to a nearby bracket by a couple of strong magnets. reversible in seconds if need be.
