Driving my car now with just the fuel range on the display showing and I have noticed when I set off on a journey to work 12.5 miles my display can show mopes miles on the range than when I started -ie 81 miles left in the fuel tank and it rises to 86 , this I think is due to getting more MPG as I'm driving along , It does go down slowly

Same here. Sometimes I can go 20miles or so with using no fuel ;)
It's a bit strange though that when the low fuel light comes on the range reads ----- As that's when you really want to know how far you have left.

After refuelling the range estimate will be updated depending on the
average MPG the car is achieving, I've noticed it changes markedly
depending on the terrain and my driving style.

On my TA Trekking, the best Range I've seen is 485 miles, corresponding
to an average fuel consumption of 63MPG, a tad optimistic maybe

The range reading is deliberately blanked once fuel gets low as it becomes
much less predictable, you really should refill ASAP

You still have at least 5l of fuel when ---- sign appears so no worries.

But today it started showing 63 then when I rev up because of learner drivers 3 point turn it show 44 and stay that way for 12 miles till I reach work when I come Back its showing 33 miles for the whole 12.5 mile journey now the amber lights on the speedo display so hope still have 5 ltrs left

They are all over the place, but they have a hell of a job to do.
The computer needs to estimate how much range you've got all whilst we're constantly moving the goal posts.
If you've 10 litres left and boot it range should say around 20 miles, then you lift off and cruise at 50 mph doing 60mpg, range should shoot up to around 130.

That's why it shows ----- below 30 miles left. It knows it can't be relied on so shuts up.

Where I work driving boats we have on the gauges fuel used. We know we start with 440 litres on board fully fuelled , and the gauges count away throughout the day. At the end of the day if the gauges say 'fuel used 353.8 litres' for instance we know for sure that as soon as we put 353.8 litres in you can see the fuel in the filler neck.

I'd love to see this on a car. We know how big the tank is. What a simple way to know exactly when you will run out.

A clever aspect of the FIAT TomTom integration is that when the fuel drops below a certain point, the navigation asks you if you want to be directed to the nearest filling station. I imagine that could be quite useful at times. Clever stuff! :)

Despite my TA 4x4 suggesting it had 3 litres left this morning, actually had 7. Lowest I've run for a while, got me home yesterday from work (46 miles). If I only need fuel twice a week that would be progress :)

The range will jump up and down on ALL cars as it is calculated on the current driving practice .e if you are driving at an economical 5omph in top gear with Eco on then the range assesses that if you continue under these conditions you will achieve a high range e.g 350 miles. I you take of Eco and increase to 70mph the car will compute that if you continue at this speed you will achieve e.g 270 miles. If you then after say 10 miles drop your speed down to 30mph the range will go right back up to e.g 360 miles. That's why a full tank range could be extremely low if you go straight into driving at 70mph, or extremely high if you go into driving at 30 mph.
Therefore the range will adjust to you CURRENT driving speed and conditions and is recalculated every few minutes.

I have driven a hundred miles and had a longer range at the end of the journey than I had at the beginning, also on a Citroen DS3 1.6

Maybe you didn't spot this, but you are replying to a post last added to in June 2017, and actually started in 2013!! Sometimes it can lead to confusion if rather old messages get bumped back up like this - as often things have changed since the original poster posted :)
