Just had an email from the supplying dealer reminding me about the 1st service, car supplied new Sept. 2012. the vehicle currently has 9,500 miles recorded and my understanding was that the first service is due at 18,000 miles. As I do not want to compromise the warranty can anyone please clarify.

Hi Geoff,

Basically the Panda's service schedule is the same as the 500. I only say this because my service book is old and doesn't even cover the new shape Panda, but I was told they are the same.

In order to comply with the warranty it needs to be done every 18,000 miles or every two years, whichever comes first. At two years the brake fluid and filters need to be changed regardless, but based on what you have said I'm guessing your car will easily make 18k in 2 years.

Two points to note aside from that are as follows (am quoting from the service book).

1. If the vehicle is mainly used for town driving, the engine oil and filter should be changed every 12 months.

2. If the vehicle is mainly used for town driving or has an annual mileage of less than 6,000 miles, the engine oil and filter should be changed every 12 months.

Basically, your dealer is just emailing you to see if you would like a service after 12 months. It's pretty standard practice (as it means more business for the dealer), but the short answer is that you do not have to take their offer up right now.

The only other thing I noted in the service manual (page 13 of mine) is that "Any service must be carried out within +/- 1000 miles of the mileage specified". So you just need to make sure you don't leave it too late.

If you are still not certain, you can use the chat function under Contact at fiat.co.uk. I used this yesterday to talk to someone about a possible recall, and it was very useful.

Thank you for that. Just had the oil and filter done at the local Halfords service center. I specified the correct oil and was given the unused oil (Selenia K). Total cost £69. Dealer quoted £99.

That's ideal, great price too!(y)

One other point; did they use a genuine FIAT oil filter too?

I only ask as I noticed page 13 of the service book also says "Any part(s) fitted and materials used must be FIAT Genuine Parts or parts of an equivalent high quality".

I have no idea as to what other parts FIAT consider to be of an equivalent high quality, but I thought best to mention it.
