Can anyone tell me in the simplest possible terms how to activate the free one year live services on my Tomtom?

Do I need an activation code?

At this point I am finding the TomTom site / discussion forums utterly impenetrable!

Thanks in advance as I know one or two of you have bought this device and i'm just hoping that someone knows what to do!

All the best

(PS - I've got past the 'installing MyTomTom hurdle', so that their website recognises my device. However on the map updates section the implication is that i need to pay to get them, whereas i thought this came for free for the first year...)

I believe you get map updates for 90 days from 1st use. You get live services for a year. You can subscribe to map updates if you want to. This is why it is offering the option to you.

You need to install the tomtom software on your computer and then sync your device.

Thanks deeyup.

I actually cracked it at about 1-30 last night....

The 'secrets' were:

0. Realising that the funny installer object that easily downloads (to an iMac, in my case) is actually double-clickable, rather than just a static picture. I'm a bit embarrassed about this step, but would it have been so hard to give it an obvious button???

1. Realising that the MyTomTom service does not create an application, but allows the nav unit to become a network connection. (I.e. don't go looking for a programme to run as with the older TomTomHome based devices.) It uses the web-browser as the interface

2. Create a MyTomTom account (quick and easy) on the TomTom website

3. With the unit disconnected from the computer AND outside (!) Go to My Services and log-in with the id you created. After a while you a get a confirmation message on the nav screen that all is okay (i think there is an FAQ on TomTom's site that explains this bit.

4. Then connect the unit to the computer and manage everything via the green MyTomTom button on the TomTom website:
https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/mytomtom/managecontent/

5. I think step 4 starts the 1year counter for live services and the 90 day counter for maps.

6. As we have rubbish broad-band in this little bit of Hampshire, it took about 3 hours to download the c.3Gb of updates. During this time, i went to bed!

7. Come down in the morning and the nav unit should be telling you all is okay!

My next stage of this trial-by-endurance is to see if I can work out how to pair the device with the car.

Dear FIAT / TomTom

Would it really have been so difficult to publish step-by-step instructions with pictures? It makes for happy, calm and satisfied customers!!

Re: Panda 4x4 / TomTom (<== arghhhh!)

Hi - I successfully paired the TomTom to my 4x4 - things like the main menu button stumped me for a while...

Anyhow, it is actually rather good.

Aside from navigating to places, I can use it as an interface to select songs from my iphone to play via the Blue&Me USB port.

It's all surprisingly good and quite easy to use once set up!

One thing (which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view); the TomTom does not interrupt music being played from the iPhone. I'm not sure if this is the same with the radio, but i would have expected it to be a bit more integrated or at least give the option of having the spoken directions overriding the audio.

Oh and the car graphic i get is a red Panda - I think its an ordinary one with side mouldings, not a 4x4 (which is nice, but it would have been so easy for them to match the model and colour as well).

Mmmm, so why do I get the jalopy?

Anyway, yes, you don't get audio through the head unit, just the tinny tomtom speaker.

You may have found out already, but in case you didn't know, you can access the tomtom through the steering wheel controls. Press the page button (right thumb top button from what I remember, then scroll wheel up I think? Sat nav shows on the dash clocks display, ok the scroll wheel, and there you go.
Great for changing trip computers, not great for inputting addresses. :)

Blimey. All this sounds a bit of a nightmare! Lol. My TomTom is sitting on the sideboard waiting for a car to put in in :)
3 weeks or so to go - its in transit apparently. Yessssss!

Well impressed with the blue&me TomTom. Not only has it got the right colour car on the screen, but the setup worked 1st time (so did the mobile pairing). Brilliant.... :)
