Tire question, what sits wider on a 6x15" wheel.
185 with 55 side wall or 195 with a 50 side wall. ?
The 55 would probable have more side wall convex, so smaller profile wider walls.
The 50 would sit probably more square compare to profile and side wall.

So what is your insight in this, what would be the wider combination, would the 55 side wall stick more out then the 50.

This is my take on it.
6 inch rim is 152mm, so I think both tyres will taper in to the rim.
The 195 will taper in more but will be wider towards the tread.

The side wall height will be a smaller percentage of the tyre width with 195/50 against 185/55 but still a very similar actual mm measurements.

I'd say both tyres end up the same width at the rim, but the 195 will be wider at the tread area and 1/2 way between the tread side width and rim side width 1/2 way along the sidewall, if that makes sense?

Edit, I've just read that tyre section width is measured from the widest point on the side wall not the tread, so forget most of what I wrote above. The 195 will look wider regardless of the rim.

We have just had to go through this with my wife's 500. Her car has just done 18000 kms and we damaged the sidewall on one of the tyres and the Continental 185/55/15 is just not available in South Africa. We ended up buying 4 x Continental 195/50/15. Continental Tyres told me that the width will be slightly wider and the OD will be 18mm smaller.

195/50/15 tyres are much more common here and therefore 4 cost less than buying 2 x 185/55/15 of another make. I did not want to mix two different brands on one axle. Fiat said they will uphold the warranty so long as 4 tyres were changed. They did not want 195s on one axle and 185s on another.

They are on the car and they definitely look wider.
