Fitting the old carburettor fuel pump to a punto engine

This tackles a problem I encountered recently. Newer 'fire' engines don't have the drive pin that makes the old style carburetor pump work. Thus if you want to fit a carburetor on say a Punto engine you must either install an electric pump which is quite expensive (£40-100) or change the whole engine head for one off an older engine.
This article explains how to fit the original carburetor pump relatively easily.

You will require:

* Socket set.
* 5M metal Drill bit.
* Drill.
* A cam from a carbed engine.

This is the problem. The mounts for the pump are still there but no drive pin.

Unfortunately the cam end on the engine I was using was also no use. The part that is supposed to make the pin move in and out is not a cam so it needs to be replaced with one that is.

Fortunately I had a spare cam from an older engine. Changing it is relatively east. Make sure it is cleaned before installing

You need to drill a 5mm hole through to the pin drive cam. Its worth noting that if you do this wrong you can potentially DESTROY the engine!! Take your time. Even a couple of mill off could mean it won't work.

It seems fiat anticipated people might try this and once you have drilled the hole and fitted the pin part of it is exposed. This is no use as oil will escape from the head. This can be overcome by either filling with silicone sealant or fiber glass. i used the latter.

And thats it.. Pump fitted and working fine.
