Anyone know if i can find and fit a cigarette lighter easily? I want to be able to run my FM transmitter without batteries.

Thanks
Ben

Thanks, just bought a standard one on ebay for £1.99

Are the power and earth wires likely to be there already? Thanks

Recieved the lighter today, looks identical to this

I can't work out how the middle comes out so i can plug in my phone charger etc. Does it need to connected up before i can take the middle out?

Also, wire connections.....It didn't come with any instructions so i don't know where they go. Can take pics if needed.

Thanks
Ben

Ben you have bought the lighter bit that you pull out, NOT the whole unit. You now need the holder bit (it has the wires out the back, and the green light up plastic bit and bulb)

LOL!

Thanks Chris, don't suppose anyone here has a holder going cheap?

Can't believe i did that!

Only shop i've seen around me is halfrauds and they don't have them on the website.

Thanks for the warm welcome

I have got one you can have... PM your address and i will stick it in the post once i find it.

Right, Tony kindly sent me his lighter socket and i'm a little confused by all the wires!

The main barrel has 2 pins coming out of it which have some plastic plugs on them which have 2 wires coming out of each (One has a rad+green and purlpe+white wire whilst the other has big black and small black wires).

I asume the red+green and purple+white wires a positive whilst blacks are negative?

And theres a lighting wire, can this just go to say the lighting behind the headlight switch?

Thanks
Ben

The wiring is pretty simple and may be easier throwing out what's attached as it seems to be making things confusing. A cigarette lighter socket needs one +ve & one -ve, the +ve has to be the centre pole as otherwise some of the things you plug in will be destroyed the -ve will be on the surrounding body so look at the two posts sticking out the back and you should easilly see which is which.

As for the light you need a +ve from the lighting circuit (easy to splice into the heating control lighting) and a -ve to anywhere. It is worthwhile having a multi-meter just to help make sure the polarity is correct.

The lighting from the cigarette lighter doesn't come from the main unit but a bulb that slides into the green plastic sleve round the unit so don't get that mixed up.
It sounds more complicated than it is.

Thanks Alan, makes perfect sense.

Do i need to solder the wires or am i ok just stripping the ends of the wire, twisting them to make the contact then using electrical tape to make sure it all stays in place? Just that i won't be able to get hold of a soldering iron for a few days.

Ben

And of course i'd need spade ends which i don't have. I'll see if i can get a reasonable connection with electrical tape tomorrow (Not sure if i've still got any left to be perfectly honest!) and if not i'll have to get the soldering iron (At my dads).

Thanks everyone, expect more questions when i find that theres no power wire in sight!

Took me ages but its all done now :)

Wrongly assumed that i needed to remove the dash which took a fair while as i didn't know what was attached and what wasn't. Then i had the issue of removing the radio without any removal tools, eventually got it out with 4 kebab skewers (This bit took forever!) and found a singal removal key behind the radio :s

Anyway, the wiring was already there. The lighter just plugged straight in so i asume that all the required fuses etc are all there. Then putting it all back together took ages again, the top edge of the dash being the worst part.

Tried a phone charger and tyre pump which both work fine (as well as the green ring around the lighter).

Thanks to everyone, especially Tony for supplying the lighter :)

Yea its black with a green illuminated ring around the edge. Tony also sent the element part which i didn't put in, looks like that might light up green too (Although im doubtful)
