General Cigarette lighter

I think they came in the 4x4 as a standard feature so someone on here may have spare one for you(y)

Dave.

If i remember rightly theres a blanking plug which pops out just to the right of the radio. You can buy a cigarette lighter from any motor factors, halfords etc for about a fiver. Then just wire it up to a 12v source - the radio will usually do the job, especially if you're only using it for charging phones, ipods etc.

i have a spare green original up for grabs £5... plus p&p

well ive got study leave and i think im gonna do this, ill go out and buy it and then all i need to do is wire it, some quick quesitons

if i connected it to the radio how would i do this?
also how would i do it with fuses if i connected there?
cant i connect straight to the battery and then to the earth on the wing?
if not any of these any other ways>?

hmm i think thats it

thanks

J

so i get some thick electric wire and a fuse., wire from ligther to fuse (soldered cus im lazy lol) then more wire soldered then onto positive side of battery. then wire from ligther to earthloom (hedgehog)? am i right in this, should be easy to do, otherwise the 4 years of electronics in school was a waste lol

thanks

J

you can normaly get away with splicing the stereo wire as long as you use a fuse on it somewhere... that or the ignition wire... both are heavier guage wires...

so i can get a 15 amp fuse, or what about any higher? 25 maybe?

and i can get a standard ciggy lighter 12v, fuse holder, 17 amp wire on small reel and i connect it all together with my soldering iron

then connect it to the earth(hedgehog(i think)) on drivers wing and positive on battery

if ive got soemthing wrong pelase say as im goingto buy it in a bit

thanks

J

Yes. That's right. But don't go any higher than 15A with your fuse. Standard car lighters pull about 15 to 20 amps, so you want to err on the side of safety. If you find you keep blowing fuses you can always fit a higher rating. I think a few blown fuses would be preferable to setting your car on fire eh? (y)

and the ciggy ligther was to small to fit in the hole already in the car, so the plug that fills the hole in i converted with a good old dremel and made a big hole in it for the lighter to fit in, and its like a big washer and fits perfct now

here it is:-

Hmm I reckon my one will be getting similar treatment, I'll need a cigarette lighter to power my pda (which costs 3x as much as the car:eek: ) because with thats capable of all my satnav, and in car enterainment (mp3's, movies, internet... hehe who needs a flash stereo!!!). Oh and the cigarette lighter will be helpful for lighting cigarettes as well.

I've also got lying around one of those old Moss motion detector alarms that stuck up on the dash and had that night rider syle LED display on it so I think that'll be going on at the same time (nice and visible so the little ****es in my area will hopefully stay area from the car). I think I should be able to run that off the same line.
