Hi all,
just have a couple questions about my 93' Fiat panda 1L selecta, the car has the cvt transmission currently, i was curious to what the sort of max horsepower and torque the transmission and engine can take reliable (also unreliably) i don't expect it to be huge numbers (especially for the cvt box) but a friend of mine is quite handy with tuning on old school vehicles and is happy to help me out, but doesn't know what parameters he can work with,
many thanks

Welcome

What ever you do to the engine it would be pretty hard to break as it's a non iterferance engine the usual route is to fit larger engines from the fiat group
But beware that the selecta S belt drive life typically. Doesnt texceed 75000 but others do last if in safe hands ?
Better to up grade poss fitting a later punto engine and box. There. Lots of threads showing details of up grades

Hi and welcome.

CVT in general are not much diferent to other AT, ideally better time and acceleration could be achieved due to seamless 'transmision'. i.e. Nissan Primera P11-144 Sport CVT.

In regards to Panda Selecta, if the box is working fine - keep the car standard or swap to manual and sell the CVT to MEP or other member willing to stock up.

Selactas are capable but the CVT cluch seems to reach the date were it can work for next 25 years or not.

Good to know they are non interferance engines, has anyone here ever done major modifications to this engine before like forced induction? im only looking for a small sort of tune up but i am curious to see what others have done with this platform. As for a later punto box would it be possible to mate newer auto to the original engine as mine has 9000 miles on it from factory, and i will need to stick to auto boxes due to a license restriction which i am working on changing.

I would love to swap to a manual but unfortunately my license restricts me to an auto at the moment which i am currently trying to change, but quite like the auto in the car just don't want to shred it apart if it cant handle another 20-50hp etc.

The car is ?? How old. How well preserved ??
What's it like under neath do you have any rot!! Add some photos after your 5 th post
There are a few exselectas about now
Get your licence sorted if poss then read in the tuning section

Mep. = "most easterly pandas "by the way

There is a man who has done a fair bit with the 1 litre fire engine. there are afew bits on the forum too but mostly in the Uno and cinq areas :)

Sweet i've had a quick skim through and don't see any transmission specs, but thanks for the engine specs as now Im sure the engine will hold up

I am still trying to sort my license as i would favour a manual box for tuning, and i should know by the end of next month. Until then has anybody done any major testing on the cvt's, to test their breaking point, shouldn't be a massive amount of extra torque being put through it but also don't want to snap it apart due to it being such low mileage, will post pictures once i can

Do it Pandamonius Maximus style - build it and see how far can you push it.

On the other side hearing about your licence restriction and can see on the radar that any potential modifications can trigger masive insurance premium increase, have you tought of that ?

Is your selecta 1.0 or 1.1?
Have a look on parts list from attached link, its not cheap stuff. not to mention drastic change in mpg.

As someone who puts too much power thro the standard panda gearbox on a regular basis I would recommend that you do not tune your selecta for more power.

The Selecta are great fun but when the gearbox has trouble they are expensive and difficult to fix. I would not inject extra strain so that it has an easier life especially if its your only car.

The later Panda selecta's where 1108cc and fuel injected producing 55bhp. If yours is one of the early carbed 999cc 45bhp selecta's the you can upgrade the engine to 55bhp on your current gearbox without any problems. I even have a spare 1108cc selecta engine you can have ;)

The above standad 1108cc panda selecta was running with a broken gearbox mount and a blown head gasket. It was still running a second quicker down the strip than the 100hp brabus smarts!

Nope, as CVT boxes of the 80s and 90s were renound for not being capable of taking much power. Hence them only being fitted to small engines, unlike nower days.

Personally I'd leave it as it is. If you want an easy mod that the gearbox will take, then fit a 4x4 cam. If you've a 1.1 you've already got the most powerful 2mk Panda (as they came out of the factory) :D

I was thinking of pushing it until is blows but i also was unable to find another selectas gearbox that i could throw in if it did break, as for modifications that wont be a problem my license is restricted due to changing country but i have been driving for 3 years so have 3 years no claims which has allowed me to have mods at my age.

its 1.1 selecta, and i do realise it wouldnt be cheap, i was originally going to put a honda D16 in it but after looking into the mount design and other components of swapping i figured id try the stock route first. Mpg doesnt bother me, smiles per gallon right ;)

I have a spi 1108 selecta with a catalytic converter already, i would like to get alittle more zing in its step (hence why i was gonna D16 swap it) but if i has the quickest factory version, i suppose a swap might be the only way ;)

They may be renound for being POS's but i figured id ask as i know some older cvt boxes are quite strong, (my friend does lots of tuning, asked him and he said shouldnt be a problem as hes worked with cvts before just doesn't want to blow mine up on his rolling road and because of its low mileage).

i do have 1.1 so it would be the fastest factory mk2 panda

and for those who are wondering i have a work van so this is essentially my weekend car
