I thank the answer for me is to start building up a little stock pile of parts. I still need a repair manual. I down loaded the one give on the link but can not open it. I tried on a tablet which was android and I tried on an apple phone so I'm going to have to try on a windows desktop. Can any one with 4x4 Panda experience help me come up with a list of things I should start stock piling for spares?

I don't know what level are your mechanical skills, but try to change your attitude more towards : try to repair first, if no luck replace. Those days aftermarket parts are not the same quality and they won't last that long as the original ones.

Leave the wheel bearing aside for now. You have correctly identified prop shaft support bearing but try to grease the old one first, them pattern ones from eBay does not last long- few members will agree with me. Ideally take the props shaft of the car, still can be used in 2wd. And soak the central support plate in used engine oil. Try not to take prop shaft to pieces as it might require balancing afterwards.

I have re-packed old wheel bearings with fresh grease in a pick up truck. It was real easy. Grease in the palm of the hand and continue to press and rotate the bearing into grease over and over until all the old grease pushed out. From what I've seen of pictures I imagined that the Fiat Panda wheel bearings were Machine press and seal which would prevent me from repacking them with fresh grease. Is this not the case?

I have been driving it around in 2 wheel drive and I still hear the noise?

While in 2wd mode the prop shaft is still rotating as the freewheel hubs were not fitted in standard 4x4 Pandas.

Wheel bearings suppose to be sealed-up units but it was proven that the bearing seal from inside can be gently removed / prised off and grease applied.

Re the noise while on the lift :

1. make sure you got enough gearbox oil in - your inner drive shaft gaiters does not look too good. You still got the old style gaiter with plastic bush on the shaft acting as a seal - I've got a pair of these - will get postage costs. Unless you want to upgrade to the newer ones.

2. make sure passenger/ ns/ long drive shaft does not rub against sump guard.

3. make sure your brake disk rotates freely and there is no massive rust residue on the outside circumference.

4. make sure your wheel bearing does not have massive play in it - up/down, left/right.

5. make sure outer cv boot is sound and cv joint have grease inside.

Get a mechanic stethoscope from your local tool / harbour shop help to diagnose noise sounds like this.

I can send you the PDF manual
Let me know

about the wheel bearings, If yours are just dry, but without play just open them, { i use small flat pointed knife to lift the green bearing seal} and pack with new good quallity bearing grease, you may warm the grease in hot water and put it in the syringe to make application easier, but just the finger will do the trick :)

Thanks for Bartpanda. That's exactly case I really appreciate the pictures. Do you have a recommendation on a bearing grease in particular or could I just use Marine Greece?

The little tank ran hot straight an normal for the whole trip up to Oklahoma. 5 hrs at 65/75 MPH.
