Panda (Classic) Restoring my first Fiat!

Introduction

Hi all, just registered here since I'm suddenly a Fiat owner after a few drinks on the bank holiday Friday and Fleabay being far too accessible on my phone. Always fancied a 4x4 Panda, and this one came up locally for cheap. So much for my one-out-one-in garage rule :D

It's got a fair few dings and has been off the road since 2002 (used as a farm runaround since then it seems, though only ~40k!).

It hasn't got any rear seats, and the bonnet is knackered after someone broke into it with a monkey wrench (probably something to do with the missing spare wheel ). Also missing a wing mirror and other things that fly off when you're ragging round a farm. Fair share of holes too, but I have old Fords so just another day in the office for me :p
Hi and Welcome!
Drink buy is pretty common here, so don't feel guilty.

We've seen this one ( emergency/ not too wise bonnet opening) advertised as well, even some discussion took place but can't remember was is here or on FB.

Ex-farm pandas are common as well, but they are normally in poor condition as farmers keeps them going will poor/lack of maintance at all ( no road legallity requirements). Mine had really bad piston rings, and much more.

Often speedo cable is broken/snapped therefore milleage might be much higher.
Mice habbit can cause major electric issues, check behing the engine sound proofing fabric.

If you need any bits/parts just place wanted add.

Where do you base?

Cheers firstcar - pretty sure the list starts with doors, bonnet and boot!

Got it up on stilts today, doors are dreadful (pretty standard for Pandas I hear?). Sill aren't great either, though much worse on the o/s.

Thanks kolza, good call on the mileage, will check the cable tomorrow. So far haven't found any evidence of rodents, though will double-check the firewall (with pics). I do actually have a problem with the intermittent wipers being far too intermittent (they pause every 10cm of movement), though they're fine on full blast. I was guessing a dodgy relay...

More pics! You can see something heavy fell on the top of the boot, probably off of the knackered roof rack, and bent the o/s hinge enough to stop the boot fitting snug and actually locking. Going to have a go with a hammer, but might need to find a replacement in the end.

Welcome to the Forum!

ahh nice!
the floor pan does not look overly bad. some cutting out and welding new in on the boot floor should be easy enough. the sills.. yeah sometimes its more easy to actually cut the outer sill off, weld up the inner sill then weld the outer sill back on. its something i have tried to avoid doing to be fair but it is the more "correct" way to do it.

on my crazy panda (the one that started off like yours), one of the rear sills was bad. because i didnt really care about dents and marks i just bent the metal back, built up the far inner and middle sill then just folded the outer sill back down and welded that. its no way the right way of doing it, but it worked.

give the brake lines a good checking over or just replace them all for what it takes, i renewed the whole lot on both of my pandas just because they are kinda the most important part of the car. cylinders, disks and pads are quite cheap for this car which is nice.

for the bonnet i would just bend it back into somewhat of an original shape for now. if you wait one may even turn up in the right colour.
the doors are a pain sadly, replacement ones are about you just have to keep a look out for them. as MOT's go, so long as they have no sharp edges they will pass no matter how bad they are.

for the electronics, most of the time you can get away with cleaning up the earthing points and all will be fine if as said the mice have not got to any wires.

i will highly advise you check the condition of the inner CV boots. on this car the CV boots hold in the gearbox oil. if they have split you will end up with about 300ml of dirty oil left in the gearbox not doing things much good.

also check over the 4x4 prop shaft, my crazy panda when i first got it had some of the UJ needle bearings completely missing! should not really be a problem at 40k though!

if your gear stick acts like a spoon in a bowl of rice pudding when changing gear, 2 small fixes will make it good again

please have a look through some of my threads on what i did when i got Talon, Fallout and the Marbella.
though i think you could relate more to Fallout looking at the boot floor in yours somehow i think fallout's was worse! (being a car used for moving sheep, maybe it was the sheep wee that rotted it all)

when it comes to cleaning the car.. i just jetwashed... everything. took all the interior out and just jetwashed the whole inside of the car. works well :slayer:

we love pictures on here, get an album set up in the Gallery, stick all your pictures in there as you go about your project and add the "linked medium" of the pictures to the update posts ;)

good luck with this project, always nice to have new folk on here looking to get an old panda back on the road again.
hey and once you get it up and running, bring it to some car shows, and the 4x4 events we have!

My intermitant wiper didn't work at all and it was an easy fix. You just need to take out the little pcb on the wiper unit and go over all the joints with a soldering iron and it should do the trick! Yours sounds like an intermitant dry joint, hope this sorts it!

Thanks for the welcomes all - especially Dragon Man for all the tips. Checked the speedo cable today, working fine! Not sure who'd clock a farm Panda, so I'm hoping it's genuine :D

I've tried creating a gallery but have already run out of space at 10 or so images - does the cap increase if I post more?

Anyway, sorted some of the floorpan today - next are the sills (pretty much all of both sides ), then some holes in the boot...

Oh and here's my rodent dropping-free firewall. Mud-catcher is full of mud too :)

Last two pics are of a question I have - there's sound-deadening rubber stuff lining the footwell which seems to come away easily, except for some of it being tightly gripped behind the mounting for the accelerator pedal. Is this normal? How do I move the pedal if so? I don't want to damage the material, but can't find a way to get it out so I can cut more tin worm out...

ahh sorry, i forgot about the 5 post thing. now you have made more than 5 posts you should be able to upload your photos to an album :)

well first thing. wow nothing like taking to it strait away! good show!

that sound proofing can be a pain to move but it does with some wiggling. you kinda have to get one side over, then the other while bending it. i think i had to undo both clutch and throttle cable. (good excuse to grease them both ;) )

before undoing the clutch cable from the pedal i really recommend getting some one to press the clutch down while you use a bit of rope or heavy duty zip tie and tie the clutch arm on the gearbox's bell housing in the disengaged position (under pressure). it makes working on the clutch pedal a hella easy when it comes to fitting the cable on and off.

heh that prop looks well caked in mud! i recommend checking over the rubber mountings bolted to that plate which holds the middle shaft. they often split sadly. you can still buy the mounts but they can be damn costly as they also have the support centre bearings for the shaft attached to them. now you can buy new and fit them.. or you can do what i did and cover them in tiger seal.. if the bearings are good. it may be a bodge.. but its lasted quite some time on my other panda and still holding strong with no signs of stress or fatigue.

in all fairness, if you want you can still take the car in for an MOT without the prop shaft (mine is like this at the moment) and it will pass on it with no advisories (mine did).
i do recommend giving the old prop a bit of TLC just re-grease things here and there. but if you do take it apart, dont do what i did and forget to mark it. really as simple as just getting a centre punch and hammer and just put a few pop marks along one side of all the joins.
if you don't and you put it back together out of alignment, you will end up with the mother of all subwoofers thudding away under the car at speed. tying to balance it is a pain.. though i think i have cracked it if you check my last post in the "project fallout" thread.

as for the mileage.. those pedal rubbers look almost showroom condition. a dead give away of a high miles car if they are worn ;)

keep up the good work!

Brilliant stuff, saw this one on Fleabay, too far away and not enough drink consumed for me to buy it but really interested to see what work needs doing and the solutions you come up with for the inevitable problems. In the process of buying my first Panda too, though a bit less of a project than this! Getting straight on to it too, bought last weekend and already getting it patched up.
Subscribed and looking forward to the next instalment.

I'm also very new to the forum but incredibly helpful bunch and a seriously knowledgeable hive mind!

Thanks again all. Got some replacement seats yesterday for the grand ol' sum of £18, along with a new o/s wing mirror for a fiver :)

Here's the list of parts I'm still after:

gear linkage boot
air filter case
exhaust rubbers (full set)
o/s fender indicator
n/s indicator lense
bonnet
bonnet catch
bonnet arm
roof rack
o/s boot hinge
n/s & o/s plastic door sills
aerial

I'm going to have a stab at welding up the doors so as to not waste them, and will use filler on the boot denting.

No more progress to show just yet, am off on holiday now, but hopefully will be able to get back to it next week or the weekend after.

Also saw these bull bars on the bay:

Seems a bit pricey, but they're located about a mile away from me... how hard to find are they normally?

In this pattern I would say one per two years.
For that price you could expect a bit better condition, but it is what it is.
