General Where's the 'Camel'?

Hi Peeps

Long time, no talk!
Got married, had kids etc etc. lol

So, where is the beast? Anyone seen it or heard of it?

Nick

We did have a lady post on here about a year ago claiming to have bought Camel. We asked her to attend some shows so that we could finally see it in the flesh but she didn't respond.

You may be able to find the thread with a 'search'.

Dunno really.
I did love the Panda, but a full rebuild to that standard would be sadly impossible.
It's funny, there are definately a couple of things I would do differently if I built Camel again. The first big mistake was selling it!!! Then removing all the sound deadening. She was LOUD! The other thing was the rally tires. They were too wide and cumbersome.
Whoever owns her is a very lucky punter indeed!
I'm gonna build another engine. That 1242mpi was heavenly, especially with the flywheel that Rakeway made for me.
I do hope she's in a good home and being treasured ?

Hello! I am the lucky owner of Camel after my quite mad hubby gave him (Sorry, sex change...) to me as a birthday gift 2 years ago. He is LOUD! Have a slight issue with exhaust fumes in the cabin at present, but it's probably nothing serious. He's tucked up safe and warm in my garage. I was thinking about seling him, but winter is here again, so I might have to wait and see if we get some snow as he's then great fun to razz up our lane (AKA rally stage). He says hello Dad ;-)

Wow! Nice to make your aquaintence. So glad she's (sorry, he's) happy.

I was telling the lads it needed sound deadening on the bulkhead! (any in-car audio firm could do this for you)
Also, box in the fuel pump behind the drivers seat.

Sounds like one of the joints in the exhaust is leaking. Check the manifold gaskets, the two gaskets in the 10mm spacer where the exhaust goes to a two-pipe, the doughnut at the end of the downpipe and the final join under the boot floor.

(The spacer was needed to prevent the exhaust fouling everywhere because the 1242cc block is 12mm taller than the stock 1000cc)

Tell her (him) as Dad I'm still not paying uni fees! Lol
Stay in touch on here wont you.

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't stopped in in a while, Cars have taken a back seat of late.
I'm afraid I'm over in the Seicento section atm as I now have an Abarth. Sadly Mechanical knowledge is NOT a virtue over there unlike here! Trouble is I'm now dealing with **** like PAS torque sensor failures!
How is everyone?!
Nick

You are not wrong there, long time cento enthusiast here but of late I have stopped going in there and left all the groups for them on facebook and the like. Centos are great but seems 99% of people owning them at the moment only really have one because they are cheap first cars and the real enthusiasts get lost in the sea of 17 year olds wanting to fit a turbo and want to know how to do so but only want to spend 26 pence  With a bit of luck in a few years it will die down a touch and wil just be people who actually want a cento that have one, how i feel this section is - no one goes out to get a classic panda now unless thats what they want. I just hope there is still some decent cinqs left by then, seems harder to find a good one that a panda now

Best thing to do with steering if you ask me is rip it out, fit a cinq column and rack - they don't need PAS and the feel is excellent with cinq stuff ;)

I didn't think there was much difference between the two in effort, maybe the panda edged it against fatter sporting alloys though!

I still have a soft spot for cento's and was gutted that mine got written off as it was a pretty sorted little beastie, wish I'd bought it back and put the engine in a panda now.

some sei don't have pas, maybe you drove one of them?? only really early ones mind - but sei have really light steering compared to a cinq, and sei mpi (2001 onward) have a quicker rack. Driven a car with a cinq column and sei mpi rack and that is excelent combo although a little heavy to park its totally managable. For me though non-PAS cars will always be better than PAS cars, particularly if they are electric PAS. Hydraulic PAS is very good by comparison but it still loses feel. That said in bigger cars with bigger and wider wheels PAS is defo a good thing but on a panda/cento size and weight car its almost just a waste carrying the extra weight around. Of course thats just my opinion, Ming has sei PAS retro fitted in his cinq for autotesting and i can imagine its really good for all the really tight turning.

Agreed, non PAS cars definitely give the most feel but it gets to a point with a heavier car where PAS is required for slow manoeuvring. E-PAS in our mk2 Punto has no feel and is generally horrible to corner in at speed, the hydraulic in my mk1 however is much nicer even though its not very composed in the corners with all the body flex and the heavy front end

Yeah the mk1 steering is pretty nice, i really liked the way my GT felt... Again, most mk1 Puntos are light enough to not have PAS, or at least the 55/60/75 were althogh not sure a nonPAS 75 is actually a thing, i had a P60 non PAS and that was fine. No idea is the 90 ever came without PAS or not, that engine is super heavy though!

Where's The Camel?

She's on e bay, that's where she is.

Moving house, lacking garaging space.

So, she's gotta go :-(
