So I decided to buy and fit a rev counter from ebay. I think I thought the engine revved a bit higher than it does. What would people consider the red line top end of the 999 fire engine is?

In other news amusing though it is I'm going to have to do something about the light. Why do (cheapo) after market tachos have to come with white dials and blue back lights. Unfortunately it's not as easy to disassemble as I had hoped. Comedy pictures of the garishness

Peak power is technically 5200rpm I think. I have quite an expensive tach because I wanted it to match the dash gauges as best possible, I've had my 750 past 7000rpm when I asked the same question about a year ago. It probably would've kept going but it was very loud and there wasn't really any 'pull' left so I changed up.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think that's where I got to with my testing. Before fitting I would shift at around 5000-5500 when accelerating quickly, but I tried going harder with the tacho and I definitely wouldn't want to go over 6500. 11,000 in racing FIREs is pretty crazy!

Now I just need to sort out the ridiculous blue light and maybe make and print a black face for the dial.

Well I have taken the rev counter back off and I will swap out the blue LEDs for something a bit less over powering. I will also make my own black face for the dial. At the same time I have decided to swap out the dash lights for LED equivalents.

Does anyone know the code for the dash lights off the top of their head? Is it 286? Was just digging around on ebay. Can anyone recommend a good light both for a sensible colour and brightness? Thanks

I personally like the standard green :)

Well. I have dismantled the the rev counter and decided to make my own dial in a more in keeping black. I'm quite pleased with the results, though I just realised I should have removed the 8000 and made the red from 6000 to 7000.

That looks great with the black face, I can only ever find those blue ones on ebay and always discount them because of that. Did it come apart easily?

It was fairly easy to take apart and ditto replace the LEDs. Shouldn't pose a real problem for most garage tinkerers/panda owners!

If anyone wants I have a pdf version of the face. Which should be good for most rev counters. It's 48mm (2") which I think is pretty standard, and should print out to 1 to 1 scale....

I made it in Inkscape so if anyone wants to edit it here is the .svg file

Further to that. I printed the dial on photo paper, but on it's own that let too much light through for my liking, so there is actually a second dial printed on card layered behind the first to block more of the light.
