My son and a friend are driving to Mongolia in a very nice Panda (look on Facebook for The Mad Maximisers) to raise money for charity - but equally of course to have an amazing drive :)

It's a great little car and they have reached Istanbul successfully, but they've had two breakdowns so far: once in Freiburg, and again just a day or two ago in Turkey. Both times it seems to have been an electrical problem - I'm not sure what exactly.

Can anyone give any advice or tips to them so that they can avoid any similar problems when they get somewhere with no possibility of helpful local mechanics or passers-by?

Do these cars have known electrical issues?

Thanks.

Welcome,
Yes, there is number of possible electrical fault reasons. Bad earth is one of the most common ones. I'm assuming that the car will be drove/ shipped back to UK.

Earth points - 1x hedgehog next to battery tray, 1x ns head lamp.

I've just seen your lad "road map" on FB, and what i can say from my experience - you cannot cross russian border from Turkey or Gorgia direction as the russian boarder is closed for turist traffic.

Which model Panda is it?

Sounds like dodgy earths, though I'd have thought your son would have checked & cleaned these before going? If not, as above, start by cleaning up the hedgehogs would be the best bet. (y)

Any more info on the trip - pictures, route, what charity etc? Quite a few of us on here refuse to sign up to Farcebook, so I've no idea how I'd find the page you mentioned?

The section is usually very generous with time and money, so plenty of information about what he's doing might result in further donations to the charity.

not if its part of the mongolia rally it wont, it will be yet another panda sent to its death :(

I've done the Mongolia Charity Rally last year in Suzuki Carry,

As this panda is over 10 years old - there will be huge $$$$ over 1k import tax to be paid when crossing Mongolian boarder!!! Mongolia goverment is no longer keen in collecting europen "junk".
As this teem is taking part in the Mongol Rally - the oganiser is not making peoples aware of the currernt import law status as they are only keen to cash in your starting fee £1000.

But the car is already having bad earth problems - it won't survive on Kazachtan "no" roads - if problem won't be sorted as soon as possible.

Shame that another one has left UK.

All countries in that region now are putting much more attention to what happend with your car if you trying to abandon the car on their land, if the car has broked down - and been sold to local's - you still got vehicular border crossing stamp in your pasport - if you're trying to sneak out by plane - bang - $$$ import tax needs to paid ( in cash) as they won't let you out.

I know the boys very much want to bring it back as they've become very attached to it. Unfortunately the authorities have made it almost impossible what with visas and import taxes and the like.

I thought you all might appreciate this photo of the Panda somewhere on the steppes of Kazakhstan.
