Panda (Classic) Engelbert the H reg Dark Green Sisley Progress Log

Introduction

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-cla...ng-h-reg-sisley-needs-home-5.html#post3514984

So today I took delivery of the above mentioned Sisley, who I have decided to name Engelbert after the last 3 letters of his numberplate (I always name my cars in this way). All is explained as to how he came to be in my possession from the above thread so I wont touch on that too much here but will say the seller is a very kind lady. She was understanding about the transport frustrations I had and was very honest about the condition of the car.

This first post is going to be very pic heavy by the way!! I got it and did a quick assessment (I will do a more in depth assessment tomorrow) but I am extremely pleased with the condition generally, it obviously will need work but I am prepared for this (hence the project log). It has every sisley extra apart from the grille badge and is missing two centrecaps and the horn push (I am not counting the compass in this), though I wasnt expecting there to be as much of the sisley trim etc as there is! I am in the process of compiling a list of required items too.

Required Items/work required

Side repeater indicator
Front part of Airbox assembly (or new clips)
two sisley centrecaps
Front grille sisley badge
Instrument surround (See photo)
possibly bonnet vent (there is a small crack in this but I actually dont think it matters too much)
Possibly new bonnet or just work to the bonnet
Rubber headlamp rear cover
Rubber boot seal
Refurbish wheels and new tyres
Sisley Horn Push
New Battery
Aerial
Wiring repairs (wiring next to battery at least)
Repair front seat fabric
Under bonnet screwdriver
wirebrushing and undersealing, possible welding at points
Front bullbars
rear bullbars Palio I havent forgotten about this, but will wait till funds are more available if thats cool?
Obviously a stripdown and recommissioning generally of the engine is required as it hasnt run in 4-5 years

The general condition is pretty good indeed, though some rust curing and prevention will obviously have to be done. But I gave it a quick clean and it has come up very nicely, I am struggling for things to say about it as I have so much swimming in my head at the moment with it, im overwhelmed, need to sleep to digest it all! I will let the pictures and videos do the talking (still need to upload videos)
Re 4x4 light:
find 2 way connertor which runs from 4x4 switch, disconect it and bridge upper half- if light still not on- blown bulb. If it does light, faulty connection at the plug or switch itself. Re screenwash motor/pump: apply+ 12v directly to the mottor, if not work- replace. Mine just give up recently.

Thanks for the advice! Can you give me some more info on where the 4x4 switch is? Sorry if that's a silly question

So the latest update is that I have the carb to fuel pump hose fitted, need another jubilee clip though as I forgot I broke one removing it. I also filled the coolant system with water, and there doesnt at the moment appear to be any leaks, though the edges of the radiator have crystalising so presumably may not be the strongest, so I will be replacing this as a matter of course. The water in the system should help flush it out anyway :)

Planning to do a trial start on saturday, very excited!

heh nothing like using a cable tie as a hose clip.
looking good man. under the headlamp washer bottle theres just one pipe connected to the expansion tank with a hose clip.

yeah the rad does look a little shot.. i had to replace talons.. fallouts may be ok..

been told you can put a dishwasher tablet in the expantion tank, run the engine for a bit then give the system a flush.. and it comes out clean.
never done it myself but sounds like it would work well.

are you going to use engine flush? ahh i guess not if you are not going to try to start it until sat/sunday.
i used it in talon.. the oil was that clotted up it wouldnt come out of the sump drain hole :/

put some of that stuff in and ran the engine for a bit and it gushed out really cleaned it all up. dont leave it in too long as i have been told that it can damage the oil seals around the engine.

you dont wanna know what the stuff was like in fallouts engine..

being a little smug here, but i find it awesome that most of the suggested videos after you watch yours.. are mostly ones i have made :D >_<

I think the youtube thing is going to be mutually beneficial, after all, we share an audience :)

So I changed the oil today. That was a much easier sentence to type than it was to do in reality, I had to put my heavy duty socket set and wrench on, put chocks in front of the wheels as I nearly effectively ran myself over with my own car, and get into rowing boat position with my feet against the passenger front wheel, almost certain if it hadnt come on the last attempt my eyeballs would have popped. Seriously stuck on.

However the oil and filter have now been changed, the oil took longer than I am used to having to do to drain into the engine, but I am putting this down to the engine not being warmish or having indeed been run for over 4 years, but I was unwilling to attempt a start without a suitable amount of fresh oil in there. Catch 22 situation really, but I can say I am happy, going to leave it overnight to drain completely through before I attempt a start.

I also received a parcel from the incomparable AndyPanda4x4 who kindly sent me a perfect instrument surround and indicator lense :) just need to work out how to retrieve the wire from inside the body now :ROFLMAO:

Also new jubilee clips on the fuel pump hoses :)

Sounds like your average oil change. FIRE engines were always slow to fill.

So after the early success of getting the oil changed I hit several obstacles.

Tried to put the new indicator on but can't as I can't remove the front passenger wheel arch lining yet as two bolts are thoroughly rusted in.

I can't fit the instrument surround yet as I either need to drill a hole in it for the inclinometer wire or cut a small section out at the back to allow the wire through. This is because I don't want to sever and repair the inclinometer wires as I am having trouble with it already (light not coming on due to the wiring somewhere along its length) and stupidly I didn't realise that the back section of instrument surround has the places where the screws go in broken, at every point.

Tried to start the car after putting in a little fresh fuel and nothing happended. No clicking, no sound of priming, no attempting to start, nothing.

So its back to the drawing board on a few things, I will go back to it tomorrow with a fresh pair of eyes.

Thinking it through in my head and I'm struggling to think what the next step is, the amount of things which could be contributing to this problem is quite daunting, ignition module, fuel pump, engine might be seized (put wd40 down the spark plug chambers) among other things. I'm quite tired so it seems very frustrating right now but I will just have to eliminate things one by one, I am utterly determined to make this work, this car deserves it, and I feel the overwhelming desire to prove myself. This is the biggest car project I have ever taken on and I will make this work.

There, self motivation over.

If the car is not turning over on the starter and there is no click or noise from the starter when you turn the key then it sounds like there is no power to the starter and/or solenoid. Check that the connections on the starter are good, and you have power to the solenoid when you turn the key.

You will not get any fuel pump priming noise as the fuel pump is mechanical and is driven off the engine, when you do the get the engine turning it will take a while for it to draw fuel from the tank before it starts (presuming you have a spark and the pump is good)

If you want to turn the engine over by hand to check it is not seized, (its unlikely imo) then the easiest way is to jack up one front wheel, put the car in 4th or 5th gear and turn the wheel by hand, the engine should turn without much effort.

Cracking advice thankyou!!!! I can't wait to try turning over the engine by hand to either eliminate or confirm if its seized or not, thanks for the tip!!

To me it sounds like there is no power to the starter, as you would hear the solenoid click if there was power there. Did the dash lights go dim at all when you tried turning the key?

Trying to remember, I don't actually think they did but I will try it again tomorrow, what does it mean if the lights go dim?

I feel so thick today :(

Cameron, when you will sort out the starter pure fresh fuel directly in to the carb? It should crank and at least tried to fire.
edit: make sure that battery is fully charged or use bat from other panda.
to help priming fuel pump remove fuel cap.

It means the starter is drawing current and trying to turn but there is something stopping it. If the lights stayed bright then it points to a bad connection/no feed as the starter it not trying to turn.
