Panda (Classic) Engelbert the H reg Dark Green Sisley Progress Log

Introduction

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-cla...ng-h-reg-sisley-needs-home-5.html#post3514984

So today I took delivery of the above mentioned Sisley, who I have decided to name Engelbert after the last 3 letters of his numberplate (I always name my cars in this way). All is explained as to how he came to be in my possession from the above thread so I wont touch on that too much here but will say the seller is a very kind lady. She was understanding about the transport frustrations I had and was very honest about the condition of the car.

This first post is going to be very pic heavy by the way!! I got it and did a quick assessment (I will do a more in depth assessment tomorrow) but I am extremely pleased with the condition generally, it obviously will need work but I am prepared for this (hence the project log). It has every sisley extra apart from the grille badge and is missing two centrecaps and the horn push (I am not counting the compass in this), though I wasnt expecting there to be as much of the sisley trim etc as there is! I am in the process of compiling a list of required items too.

Required Items/work required

Side repeater indicator
Front part of Airbox assembly (or new clips)
two sisley centrecaps
Front grille sisley badge
Instrument surround (See photo)
possibly bonnet vent (there is a small crack in this but I actually dont think it matters too much)
Possibly new bonnet or just work to the bonnet
Rubber headlamp rear cover
Rubber boot seal
Refurbish wheels and new tyres
Sisley Horn Push
New Battery
Aerial
Wiring repairs (wiring next to battery at least)
Repair front seat fabric
Under bonnet screwdriver
wirebrushing and undersealing, possible welding at points
Front bullbars
rear bullbars Palio I havent forgotten about this, but will wait till funds are more available if thats cool?
Obviously a stripdown and recommissioning generally of the engine is required as it hasnt run in 4-5 years

The general condition is pretty good indeed, though some rust curing and prevention will obviously have to be done. But I gave it a quick clean and it has come up very nicely, I am struggling for things to say about it as I have so much swimming in my head at the moment with it, im overwhelmed, need to sleep to digest it all! I will let the pictures and videos do the talking (still need to upload videos)
There was another gap in the rain, so I fitted the front wiper motor (with bolt conversion) and glued the inclinometer in place. I went from old pics of mine and googled pics to get roughly the right placement, I think normally it would be an inch closer to the driver, but this "felt" better

So today I managed to fit the tank, still the ancillaries left to attach up, but mostly there now :) was a struggle to get the filler pipe attached on far enough, but Andy's tip of putting it in boiling water for a couple of minutes certainly helped! I just hope the fuel gauge reads something when I try to use it is the only thing, can't remember getting a proper reading from it before, the tank is empty of course but it should signal low fuel I imagine (or hope!) If not then will have to investigate further, which I hope doesn't mean removing the tank again because its a bugger to do by yourself.

Also got some protective paint under the arches

get that battery on charge man. its ready to be ran! well when you connect up the rest of the filler pipes :D

Its not too far off it now! Still got quite a few jobs to do in order to MOT though! This is not a list of everything I need to do to get the car where I would like it, just MOT, no particular order.

Fit New radiator and obviously coolant (have parts in)
Complete braking system overhaul (have parts in)
New tyres (not bought yet)
Change gear linkage bushes
Charge battery :ROFLMAO:
New speedo cable (still to get)
More wax in box sections and undersealing everywhere
Make boot close properly after I fitted the new boot seal (can't work out what's stopping it. Think the seal is sticking out too far somewhere)

And as far as mot goes that should be it. Add the following to the list for where I want it to be eventually:

Sort door bottoms
Have bonnet painted professionally because I am crap at painting
Have wheels painted or powdercoated (should they be white or cream John??)
Rear brake light guards
Front bullbar
Sisley grille badge
Sisley centre caps
Refit sisley mudguards
New complete lock set

ahh not too bad. when doing the brakes, i suggest cutting the brake pipes off and using ring spanners only.

given that you are replacing everything, do not be afraid of using a little heat to get those annoying unions out.

another thing to add to the list as a must is, when you have the rear drum all in bits make sure you paint the back plate. inside and out. you are going to have a hell of a hard time trying to source a new set. the only place you would get them is from a 4x4 being broken.

now as for the wheels.. hmm.
the original is cream, but pure white really makes them stand out.
sorry to say but the choice is yours.

Unfortunetly all but one of the back plates are dust :(

I think we may be talking about two different things, disregard me lol, I am talking about the protective guards, I take it you are talking about the rear half of the drum?

Yeah I was thinking of the drum back plates. If it's the thin pressed steel brake disc guards at the front they don't really matter at all. Their remains can be frisbeed into the nearest bin the next time you take the suspension apart.

I can see brake shoes through both of them in my trekking:D . Say thank you to 23 salty polish winters:bang:

 Isn't the slave cylinder in danger of coming adrift?

oh man that bull bar looks nice. its more tough than mine!
needs a top bar welding onto it though. they make it look really meaty.

it looks like you will have to make some brackets up to fit it though

You can't see it in the photo but there are brackets etc there tied behind as well as a mounting bar :)

I am playing with the idea, I really like the top bars, but I will see how I feel about it after living with it as is for a while :)

So today I had to drop the fuel tank again so I could get the breather pipe clipped on properly, my wife helped me though so was a lit quicker than I thought it would be :)

Next job was to try to get the car running. Fuel had to be sucked through the line to get it going but its running very nicely now :) couple more issues have surfaced to be dealt with. The front wiper isn't moving, though I suspect this will be down to either 1- me hacksawing the bolt down in situ to get it to clear the bonnet 2- the connection block. I will figure it out though, it was working before so I know it does work.

There is a whining/squealing noise that happens when its running which I have yet to discover the root of. I know oil is getting everywhere so I am wondering about water pump or gearbox issues, check it out for yourself guys in this video, its the first time I've driven it using its own fuel system (not an auxiliary tank) and more than 3ft

Driving properly for the 1st time: [ame]http://youtu.be/pCL0DYMRbLc[/ame]

typical fiat gearbox.. even my brothers multijet has the funny "get it into reverse" thing.

the sound sounds engine side, so i could be the water pump, alternator bearings, or maybe clutch bearing as it seemed to only do it when you used the clutch.

not sure on the wiper.. it was hooked up to fallout to test it and it worked great.

Thanks man, all to get checked out! But knocking things off one at a time, I figured before I tackle the cooling system it would be best to have it running on its own steam so I can bleed the system etc :) trying to do everything in the most logical order I can, the support from everyone on the forum has been great too :)

Wasn't trying to imply anything was wrong with ur conversion john it will be my fitting or hacksawing :) as I said I am a big fan of it :)

i know man, the only stuff i change is mechanical. nothing to do with the electrics.

slip the alternator belt off and see if the noise stops.. 16mm ring spanner can just about get into it.

if you are not running with coolant then it may be the water pump.

the cam belt has been changed recently? if not, its not that hard to do. while you are in there, 3x 10mm bolts to undo the water pump, give the surface a good scrape with a knife blade to get rid of all the old gasket and stick the new pump in.

the noise could also be the cam belt tensioner pulley. mine screeches sometimes when its really cold and its not like its over tight.

a rumbley graty noise is what my water pump sounded like.

Well the car was dry of coolant when I got it and I have put water in it till I got the radiator changed and put coolant in, so it may well be the water pump. Also the car never turned over between 2009 and august last year, and today was the first time it had turned over since August so I am hoping stuff will ease off once I change the coolant etc. Need to see for leaks etc too so when I change the radiator and have it running for a while stuff should either work properly or show itself up as a problem. If you follow my thinking?
