Hi All,

Recently i've been getting a rattle when I'm lifting off the throttle, which to me points towards the gearbox. Its only really noticeable with the windows down and I'm driving past high walls so the sound bounces off them.

Not too long ago I had the passenger side half shaft out to put a new gearbox drive shaft seal on, this required removal of the tripod joint -> the circlip wasn't as tight as when I took it off when I re assembled everything. I'm not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related but thought I would try get peoples thoughts before I empty the gearbox and spend time looking for something I don't know what I'm looking for as it could also be a bearing issue somewhere.

I know I'm being pretty vague but it is hard to diagnose where the noise is coming from when your driving.

Any one got any ideas ?

Thanks
Michael

Worn front propshaft cv joint + rubber boot?

Hi Seb, boot is brand new, this was replaces with the inner one at the same time, however I'm not discounting a worn cv joint, don't they click when turning if they are knackerd? I'm hoping it is not a bearing somewhere deep in the box/engine.

Something is always rattling at one time or another on my Panda, I thought that was just normal  ;)

It is, don't worry! (y)

You just need to listen out for any death rattles (you're safe Char doesn't have any before you get paranoid ;) ). From the description it sounds exactly like my exhaust, but of course we can't hear it - if I was describing when mine rattles and the sound it makes, I'd have described it like the op, so it's worth checking before pulling gearboxes apart. Thanks for your replies guys, I know trying to diagnose a rattle on an Italian car over the internet is a touch far fetched but I appreciate your input.

I've not ruled out the brakes and I have had all the front ones apart recently whilst renewing discs and pads, but it just sounds like a brake rattle.

I hope it is the exhaust and I do remember undoing that bracket that spaces the two pipes apart from each other right at the bottom of the engine so I could access something, I will check if I did it back up tight enough.

Out of interest when people have removed the tripod joint have you put the old circlip back on or did a new one go on?

I will check the 4x4 prop shaft boots as well, thanks John. Would this rattle even when not engaged?

Yeah I had to bend mine back too, was expecting it just snap but thankfully the Fiat God was looking down on me at that point!

I'll have a look at the prop shaft cv, I'll have a thorough read of kolza recent posts on the subject

Exhaust? They tend to rattle when you lift off on the 4x4 - mine certainly has for the last 6 years!

Agreed, our original 750L, Victoria, with one of her many exhausts, had a 60MPH rattle, was a single carriage way speed warning, just under 60 and you were fine, just over 60 fine also, but dead on 60 and the back box would resonate nicely off of the rear shock absorber :p
