Well most of you know that I am in Scotland.. Sadly on the way home Talons head gasket has failed between cylinders and a water channel.

Still sat at the road side as I post this.. I'll take some pics.

New head gasket time. Anything I should do while I fix it?

The cam belt is new, so should be good.

Sigh only 200odd miles till home.

Look at the positives, head gasket will probably be less than the fuel you've saved being recovered (y)

Sorry to hear of your fate John- there's never a good time but 200 miles from home is a bit unlucky.

I'd guess at 'age', has the head ever been off as far as you know?

If it were mine I'd take the valves out and clean and decoke everywhere. Then while you're in there you could either add another 8 valves or do some light porting and raise the compression, or both!

New valve stem oil seals obviously.

ahh thanks guys we got down to my house 11 hours later from that post.

yeah talon wont start, still sounds like he has compression but wont fire. the fact steam was coming out of the exhaust tells me that it has crossed to a water channel.

i have not looked at talon yet though. kinda had more important things that i needed to do, so i just stole the marbella from my brother :D

heres a few pics.. note how much stuff i had in the back.. helping some one move down to derby.. i managed to get a whole flat's worth of stuff in Talon!

anyhoo heres the pics of a broken talon..

I know its not what the point of the picture is but those front and rear light guards are ice cold

head gaskets can go due to old age and poor antifreeze causing rot as can being stood for long periods
i wouldnt beat yourself up over it just do whats necessary and try and put your new belt on in the same position as you took it off
give engine and radiator a good flushing too and yes change the water pump whilst in there

hey guys, just wondering your oppinions on some head gaskets..

i think this looks nice and strong.. lots more metal in the fire ring:

than this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PANDA-UNO...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e5bd98fdf

i may buy the 2, and keep a gasket for spares.

hope i wont have to get the head skimmed.. with it being such a sudden "blow" i am hopeful that i can get away with it.

thanks for the tips guys!

On gasket sets this looks a good bet, pukka Fiat from Partsworld (with whom I do not have any kind of sponsorship deal despite appearances!)

A lot more than the 2 options you posted but includes bolts which you will need and which eat up most of the difference anyway. listed for 1108 but the head gasket at least is identical and as far as I can tell all the others are too.

John
Sorry to hear of your headgasket failure so far from home.
Fate is obviously hitting the forum.
My Cinq sporting started running rough yesterday and the headgasket has gone today .
This time on compression between the middle 2 pots and not water as it was last time.
Probably won't get head skimmed as it hasn't run long.
But I will go for a PArtsworld kit at £39 including bolts.

Oh well time to find the WD40 and Plusgas for the bolts
All the best Dave
