General Panda Road Trip Italia

Great stuff. How are you guys fixed for the second weekend VmanC & Palio?

We can be in Harrogate on the 7th by 3pm at the earliest ( 8 hour drive from where we are staying, twice as far as if we were coming from home ), so the later you all meet up the better for us. Even if we miss the saturday meet we will stay over for the drive on Sunday though. (y)

maybe inspiration for some

i was in italy for christmas and the photo is off the 'piazza' in the tiny village of only 20 people, where we stay.

unfortunatley i was flying this time and the fiesta (hired car) is mine

I used to love my trips to Italy and Sicily when I was younger, and especially the Fiestas they'd have in the Piazza :p

It would be nice, but realistically unlikely. :( I usually roll into a little ball for the first couple of weeks of February - I'll keep it in mind if the last week of Jan is better than expected (8 x hour long meetings today - 3 to go! ), but don't expect me. If there's snow, I might get a second wind of course! (y)

I...have missed a trick here I think! I'm defo up for the Italia trip...currently no Panda adventure planned this year

I'll join in for the road trip chat if I can, but I can't make 7th Feb unfortunately. I can make the weekend before, and the weekend after possibly though. Happy to leave it up to Andy and the rest of the Pandventurers to set the plans. :D Will most importantly keep the summer holiday free! :slayer:

Si

Does anyone know of where the 4x4 even will be held? I have looked into the panda4x4 forum but no events since 2013 ???

Me and my dad have been coming up with a plan....

Yes I've got all of the information on where the events will be taking place, I will post it all up later when I get home. What's the plan John?

Well.. As a few of us are oop Narf we thought how about an over night ferry from Hull to Zebrugger? Leaves Hull at 18:30 and gets into Zebrugger at 7:30-8:30am the next day. That way we're are all fresh and ready for just driving full speed ahead across Europe.

Zebrugger to Rome is 16 hours. It also cuts down the mileage and would only be around 1000 miles each way :)

Excellent, this is the kind of info I need. We'll add that to the discussion for the Feb weekender. Have you looked into prices at all?

Yea. The ferry (car + 2 Adults + Cabin) is around £300 return. Also keep away from Switzerland. Strict road laws and apparently high road fee's. Looks like if you head towards Lyon and go under Switzerland is the best bet. Perhaps contact Fiat and see if we can swing by HQ in Turin?

Good job cheers John

I've had brief discussions with kolza, aquamarine and andyholli about the swiss issues plus other road routes, so your info is very much worth dropping in the mix :)

All good stuff for planning our European campaign! The Hull Zeebrugge (or Rotterdam) ferry is great for us northerners.

We've tried a few routes when we've driven. There's pros and cons of each, but all are fun and offer lots to see on the way...

Lots to talk about on the 7th! Just don't make me go in the back with my asthma.

Just had a look at the tolls and would appear Swizerland would be cheaper!

Clicky

So Tolls would be €36.10 each way and a one off Tax of €33.

If we went via my route (france) it would be €164.50 there and €150.50 back!!!

It also seems to suggest the route via Switzerland would take just over 12 hours which isnt too bad. Could be there in a day.

And Switzerland is stunning to drive through, lots of mountain passes and tight twisty bits  (also never had any trouble there with the local authorities or expensive tolls and been a few times now). If using motorways we'll need to buy road tax but you can get that in most petrol stations...maybe can buy online in advance?...

Italy will be the most expensive bit to drive in if we use the highways...almost entirely toll roads based on my last trip there (driving from Austria to Venice, then Venice to Pisa and back up through north Italy to the mont-blanc tunnel) and if you use the back roads the journey does take quite a lot longer  Probably more fun though :)

I've kept all my routes from the various adventures over the years, could dig them out and put some points of interest on the way
