I recently was given a very pretty 1987 Fiat Panda, Red 1000CL.

I haven't started anything yet apart from putting a set of 155 tyres on it (135's a bit skinny for me!). I have also fitted a new rocker cover gasket. That's it!!

I have a love for the old Panda's and I want this car to be back on the road and perfect in every way!! It's door are in slightly bad shape but repairable and currently a non-starter but I think this is due to the condenser. I am picking up a distributor later today for it as well as a steering wheel.

I hear that the steering wheels can be a pain to remove... any advice? (y)

Anyone have any other handy tips???
Does anyone know where I can buy parts brand-new??
Also, Are there Panda events that I could take my car along to??:D

Many thanks

James

Hi James,

Welcome aboard! The steering wheel is not too difficult I don't think. Have a look in the guides section as there is a 'how to' there.

As for parts, Fiat + plenty of things turn up on ebay. Most parts for the 2x4 are, on the whole, still not too hard to get hold of.

Welcome, step inside(y)
steering wheel is simple but usually very tight. horn push off and one big 24mm nut so make sure you've got a socket big enough and as long a lever as you can lay your hands on.
service type bits you can get dead easily as the engine and various oily bits are often interchangeable with other newer models, only body and trim can be awkward.
handy hints? read away on here and you'll see pretty quickly, if something is difficult to get or do it gets a mention on a regular basis.
Andrew
p.s.
handy hint 2: used to a 'normal' car? plan ahead if you want to slow down;)

Hi and welcome.....just one thing...not all horn buttons push out...some have 2 screws at the back of the steering wheel....having said that unless its been changed yours should push/pull out..(y)

The rest as others have said is covered all over this section....does not stop me asking questions though so fire away when you have a prob...

Fire away...get it!!!...yeah ok i know...groan...

Trying to get this thing running is proving to be more of a problem than I originally suspected. After resetting the timing, new plugs, distributor and points, cap, leads, oil etcetc, it still doesn't want to run!! :-( I'll update further as I go along.:confused:

OK, so far: Non-starter. Things I have checked/reset/replaced:
Cambelt -checked
Distributor & contacts- replaced
Serviced
Leads -checked
Coil -checked
Battery -replaced
Fuel Lines -checked
Carburettor -checked
There is a good spark, ignition timing is fine, cambelt, alternator, head gasket all check out fine.
I attempted to spray some easy-start in carb and it still doesn't even splutter. Am I right in thinking that there is a compression problem here??

I have an auto-tune guy coming out on 4.4.09 to diagnose for me. I hope I can get it running by next week!!

I was advised to put a thimble of engine oil down the spark plug holes to see if that would help make this car start... has anyone else heard of that???

Oil

I've heard of putting a dab of fuel on the plug(s) and then trying. Friend done it on a motor bike of his a week or two back and that worked.
