hi again,
not the sort of thing i've ever had to deal with before, but my front wiper started drifting across the screen like it was losing traction with the pivot over the last few days...
pushing it back cured it temporarily but now its not moving at all (motor sounds fine).

Is this a replacement issue or do i tighten some nut up or other?

I'm going to breakers this week for other bits (suspension) so any heads up on this would save me time investigating,

thanks b/

no nut or anything to tighten, the wiper arm is a push fit onto a splined spindle so the most likely cause is eiher spindle or (more usually) the socket on the arm is stripped smooth, probably the arm was frozen in place when the wipers started in this weather. Whip the arm off and make sure the spindle is turning normally and if it is it'll be a replacement arm or linkage, whichever looks smoother. good luck finding a good one, they are prone to wear.(n)

Do other Fiat Models use the same wiper motor and/or arm?

I seem to remember Unos only have one blade?

The arm maybe. The uno arm is way longer but I seem to remember it was the same fitting so I guess it was common if you find one the same sort of size(uno rear maybe???). The problem is the linkage that runs from the motor to the hole where the shaft pokes through, that is going to be different model to model, even the seat marbella one doesn't fit. Spent ages trying to work that one out before I gave up and went and found a mk2 version after I made that mistake in a scrappy. Fortunately that was about 11 years ago when it wasn't quite as difficult to track bits down.

managed to find a replacement, but not much of a reassuring spline even when newish looking, I'll try and drill a bolt through the old setup whilst its out and report back any progress.

...i'm sure a contributing factor was that when the steering /ignition /stalk assembly was changed ages ago it was put back by dodge pot mechanic so that only fast wipe worked, with no return function - learned to cancell/return it manually :) just got used to it...

but now I'm sure i'll get less wear if i can fix it -did the mechanic just plug in the wrong wires or more likely manage to lose/break the regulator (i assume some kind of electronics) to give half speed and set zero point of wiper step??

bolt or screw drilled through is a pretty common solution tbh. I should leave the wiper electrics alone unless you're prepared to bodge away for ever trying to get them working right. my old panda was set up like that and ran for years with no probs, my current one is a pain, the half speed works but if the screen gets too dry it grinds to a halt, and the self park seems to park the arm in a position where it won't restart in the full speed mode, it needs a bump at half speed to get them running.:bang: is it a mk one or two btw, if it's a mk 2 I seem to remember the 'slow' setting is an intermitent rather than a slower speed so stress wouldn't be much different.

yep, its a mkII, is it the case that the stalk may have come from a mkI? (self cancelling indicator also went out at the same time - it sounds as if this is the most technically advanced part of the whole car :)

new pivot works great... is it really that much of a mare to fix up the electrics?
hows about switching the rear wipe electrics to the front and the stalk to the rear instead??

or maybe a vatiable resistor mounted on the dash somewhere is the way2go, just to controll the speed.

thanks, b/

I have no frame of reference here for the normal wiring as the wiring on mine was mostly ripped out and redone by my father in law when he used to have this car. when I got grief with my first panda though we spent ages tracing the wiring through and no it's not too complicated and it all seemed fine, the wiring itself checked out, and the controller bit (sorry, a bit vague, this was 10 years ago) worked fine when we swapped it out into the Y10 for the intermittent and everything and yet...it still wouldn't bloody work:bang: so thet's why we just hotwired the wipers and left it at that.
yes in theory a variable would work fine, it's the setup that's on mine now, it's just set a bit low only it's not on the dash, it's buried somewhere in the depths of the engine bay and I've never quite got around to tracking it down:eek:
not sure about the self cancel, it's pretty simple too, just a tiny plastic pip on the back of the steering wheel that catches a release on the stalk on the way round.maybe just got knocked off when the work was getting done. again, haven't had that for years either and never miss it. If that bothers you take the wheel off and look at the bottom centre of the back of the wheel and the corresponding bit of stalk assembly. It should be fairly simple to figure out what's going on.
