Hi Peeps

I bought my engine!! (y)
1242cc 8v MPi from a '95 Punto 75

Is it possible to get rid of that big oblong swirlpot for the fuel??

I'm running the original panda (carb) tank (no sender). What do I need to buy in the way of fuel pumps?? i.e. Just one Facet high pressure pump bolted to the passanger kick plate??

Regards (y)

Nick

Nice choice. I hope you are keeping the fuel injection for this engine(y) otherwise you will need to replace the head(n)

I'm not sure on the swirlpot you mention, have you a photo? Leave it in for the moment!

To do it properly you should use a low pressure lifter pump (like the Facet you mentioned, high pressure for a carb, not for fuel injection) into a swirl pot, then a high pressure pump to the engine, with returns from both. However, I believe that the fuel pickup/tank sender unit on the panda will work as a baffled fuel pickup and you may be able to use just the one high pressure ( "3bar" ) pump for road use. If your serious about your off road use I wouldn't risk it however:(

Beevers panels list a 4x4 injection tank for about £45, with a bit of research (or ebay/scrapyard hunting) you should be able to find a in-tank pump unit to fit.

On a last note, all electric fuel pumps should push the fuel (mechanical ones pull) so should be mounted as close to the pickup as possible, and don't forget to uprate the fuel lines.

Has it two 2 pipes running into it, almost like a tin drinks flask? I think thats the charcol canister. If your sticking with your standard tank you can lose that(y)

You will have to add a return line to your tank anyway however.

The fuel pumps you linked are only any good for a lifter pump, they stall well before the presure required for efi.
You need something like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NOVA-ASTRA-MANTA-GTE-SRI-CAVALIER-GSI-TURBO-FUEL-PUMP_W0QQitemZ160277466636QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item160277466636&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
but shop around, I got new one for a saab for £15 off ebay.
Look for an out of tank type ("inlet" each end) from a MPI car of, say, over 1500cc to be safe (approx 160+ litre/hour - "3 bar"). If you can find one from a vw golf mk2 gti they also come with a filter all built into a swirlpot unit(y), then you just need a lifter pump.

To clarify

Right...

So, I have the barbed inlet nozzles on the fuel rail at the engine end.

The barbed outlet nozzles coming out of the tank (it includes a return btw).

What exactly am I putting in between and where???
one type of pump right next to the fuel tank, then a load of fuel pipe, and another type of pump next to the engine???

Sorry, just wanna get this right, (forget swirl pots or baffles for the moment, a mate can build me them if nesassary)

Regards

Both pumps at tank end. I think theres a diagram floating around the forum somewhere, will have a search later:)

"Ok, so one simply lifts the fuel out of the tank and the other pumps it to the engine??" Yes

I would plump for the Ref: 70187. £42.00 each from your second link for the lifter pump (all those listed are only lifter pumps in your setup).

Why not pop along to the Gaydon Auto Italia meet (see events section) next Sunday and have a chinwag(y)

Ahh ok, so anything around 5psi is only to lift the fuel out (even the Facet Universal)??
Then I could bid on the Facet Red Top on eBay as the high pressure pump?

Nick

Could pop over depending where it is? I'm in Cambridge

No, it's only high pressure as in high pressure for a carb (its still a low pressure pump, you need to maintain a minium of 3 bar pressure. They are of no use what so ever for multi point injection (I also wouldn't use one for spi ).

The pressure of the lift pump is not important, it just needs to move more fuel than you are using to keep the swirl pot full to the brim.

Useful thread

I hope some of this helps

Legend!!

I understand the principles of the system now dude.

So in fact, I really need to use the pump/swirl pot combo that comes withe the Punto?

By the sounds of the stuff above the horizontal possition of the different components are unimportant, it's just the vertical position and order that is (other than a pump close to the tank)

The options also seem fairly endless. I could get a pump/filter/pot combo OEM from another car?

If you can, thats the best way. Thats why I mentioned the 4x4 injection tank that beavers panels list, not sure the punto unit is a straight fit but a cinq one maybe (although it may be a spi pump in its swirl pot but thats easy to swap ;)) At the very least if you have it put the Punto in-tank pump to one side for possible later use.

Arn't they just :D For the time, money and effort you are putting into this car I'd plump for the beevers tank and then look for a pump/filter/pot combo OEM. Don't forget to use the Punto high pressure filter too.

Clutch compatablity

Hi peeps

Even though I'm running a 1242 8v FIRE in my 4x4, will a 1000cc 4x4 clutch fit perfectly well on it as the gearbox does??

Also will a Punto 75 clutch have a better power tolerence??

I think the Punto clutch is 180mm whereas the Panda is 170mm

Cheers

I would fit the clutch that matches your engine and flywheel, in your case the punto 75 clutch (you may have to use a panda release bearing, I did with my punto 85 clutch).
