reet... my drivers side door on my CLX is rotted to bits.
I'm sure most of you will have had this problem, so i was wondering how you went about repairing it.

I'm pressuming the easiest way is to go to a scrap yard and find a door in decent condition and get it re-speyed?

ta kindly

ISTR PandamanPaul has had his Panda door repaired professionally.

It remains to be seen how long the repair will last / how well it was done. Comments, Paul??

IME the vast majority of Pandas have rusty doors - it just seems to be a question of degree:( - so I don't know what you will find on a scrap yard.

Out of interest, my daughters CL will die this summer due to the sills and rear wheel arch seams rotting.

It's almost certain I will cannibalise it to keep my CLX happy for a bit longer, but I don't need the doors.

Oddly enough, it is one of the few Pandas I've seem without obvious rust in the doors (H plate CL in "azuro nautico", probably sea blue in English - this is a non metallic finish (obsolete colour too, but Halfords mixed us 100ml or so)), but it has more than its share of "door opening dings" down the sides.

Timescale for the above is determined by the replacement CLX (not mine) passing its MOT: first try is on thursday...

Why not to cover the rust with the appropriate paint, obviously if the structure's not seriously damaged:p[?]Here a lot of people do it, but a friendly garage could be necessary in the worst cases:D!

P.S. in Italy the road test is biennial.

Or Enzo try a scrapyard near Milan, never seen a rusty car there!

Over here rust tends to be more of a problem and it works really fast. This is because it always cold and damp and no matter where you are in the country the sea (and salt) is not too far away.

By the time the door shows rust on the outside edge it is rotten on the underside - too bad just to paint.

Fix It Again Tony!
Would swap for X19, Montecarlo Spider or GT.i.e in average/poor condition! Scottish based would be nice.

oooh well i think i'll pop to the scrap yard and get one, my drivers side door is badly damaged beyoned repair so i think its a trip to the scrap yard for me.
The passenger door is in very good nick but i've seen a couple of brown spots appearing, So I best treat them before it gets nasty.

:D...I live 800Km far from Milan, so I think it's worth to search in my area! Then Milan is quite a well-to-do city, full of snob people and Pandas are not really appreciated there[8)].

Bumcheeks, I had the same problem with my doors. so heres what i did.

Sanded down all the rust untill you get a nice shiney finish.

Bog/fill in to any cavitys loose bits and shape to door where neccessary(sp?).

Wait for it to dry before applying a waterproof paint (ordinary car paint)

Got a DIY store to cut me me some sheet metal to the shape of the bottom half of the door with a lip on three sides so it would hold the door.

Put the metal plates on with a tonne of liquid nails or the like and tucked the top of the plate under the half-way trim.

Looks a treat and no need for a need door.:D

Panda Power!

I redo my doors every summer.. I use fibre glass, filler, rust killer and sand it down and respray.. its a good weekends work but then it lasts another 12 months and looks great.. this year its hardly crept back at all.. only a little on the drivers door :)

Well, on mine it was the rear corner of the nearside door that was the worst. So, they cut out the corroded metal, welded in a new piece, then sprayed the lot. It's been perfect ever since, and I'd recommend the place without any hesitation :)

i've found somewhere that sells a whole new metal pannel you can crimp on the front. You cut the old panel out with an angle grinder and crimp this over it, i saw a frend do it with his mini and he says they sell fiat pannels too.. door looks as good as new, the panels are around £50 for a pair. watch this space...
