Hey, ladies and gents

I recently bought a fiat palio 2001 model.However, the car started leaking water two months after purchase. The water leak is between the engine and the gearbox. The car just suddenly started overheating but when I take the cap off the water is cold. I think it might be a water jacket between the engine and the gearbox. Could anyone help me? Please? With regards to the fixing of the problem that is...

The reason for the rust was, the car was in a frontal accident, about 5 years ago, and the panel beaters replaced the radiator, but failed to put antifreeze/coolant and just put 100% tap water into the coolant system, and that's what caused the rust.Always ensure you have 50/50 water and antfreeze agent in your coolant system, to prevent rust.
 
Hi guys

Apologies for not getting back to yall sooner. It was normal wear and tear of the housing around the engine. Took my gearbox out and replaced all of the worn parts and she is running like the beaut that she is again.

I used antifreeze but then stopped for a few months and that's when it started. So now I'm just antifreeze and no water..

Same thing just happened to my paramours 12 plate Punto 8v. Started a very slow drip, that's now a deluge. All coming out of the Gearbox bell housing. Happie days huh. Just have to get my local spanner twirler, to throw some his expensive time and labour under the bonnet then. Thanks for this thread and to all who sail in it
 
It's away via the AA, to get that peskie water seal/core plug behind the flywheel replaced. Far beyond all my twisted pliers, hammers and rustie box of worn hand powered mechanical implements. Be a lot of pulled hair, blood spilled and swearing too. But not by me this time.
Getting to auld for such malarkey as, I age ungracefully, in Fiat land. ๐Ÿ˜

Yes always has a sixtie, fortie mix, had my collection of Fiats over the years. This is the first with a core plug that has failed behind the flywheel. Didn't even know there was one there!!

Drove plenty of them (mostly Uno's and 128's)
with both minimal water in the radiator. And three of them for years with only Scottish tap water in the radiator (and the overflow container) if it stayed in there long enough.

But every day is a school day when you own a Fiat.
 
Water core plug (that ended up like a rustie, holed digestive biscuit) as fixed yesterday, cost of seal ยฃ12.

Cost of labour to fix it ยฃ250, locally. Got a oil and filter change and new sump pan fitted too (was beginning to look like someone had shot it with a blunderbuss, then squirted with mud and oil and water) was did whilst everything was apart. Total ยฃ480.
Hopefully the next owner will have less to replace.

31.500 miles and ten years of being squirted at with coolant and pepper dashed with high velocity stones, takes its toll on 8v Puntos.

Paramour is happie her Punto is ready for it's normal motorway bashing, to her place if employment and back. For the next two or so years.

I bough a very cheap.. and even rustier 188 punto

The sump was like one of those Brown baper bags your Chinese meal is handed over in

Mishapen and oily to the touch

Our 2004 panda 169 had a weepy camshaft seal.. which slowly dribbled oil down the timing side of the engine

Kept the sump in really nice condition :)

14 years and 94k still no concerns over it..
 
Had endless 903cc. Ohv Unos, they all leaked engine oil, all over the sump, exhaust, gearbox and driveshafts (the driveshaft seals also leaked too) and the floor rails. Was quite slippy under there. The exhausts all lasted for ages (worn valve seals, mostly turned dark pink and crispy)

But the best, was a 93 L reg four door Uno 999cc Ohc, that had a small hole, that had rusted through from the outside and the oil squirted out of the hole (if you ran in low, it didn't come out.)

Eventually took a bit of underseal off the sump pan at the front, to reveal a nut and bolt and a rubber washer had been bolted there to stop it leaking!!!!!!!

Removed that, ground down that part of the sump and filled in the hole (That now was considerably larger) with fuel tank putty, after draining the sump dry and leaving it to drip inside my lock up garage for a week (yes and I thought the previous owner was tight fisted).

It never leaked again (Ever) well until I sold it on with a new MOT and four months road duty.

But the Uno was gifted to me for free by my brother in law, as it had sat outside in his Royal mail garage repair shop for fifteen months. And they wanted rid of it.

I loved the old Uno's

Would put the modern 1248 mj in a 5 door mk 2 and have a quick 85 mpg car

I bought a cheap uno.. 17 year old had driven over a bollard.. and 10 miles later pulled up at traffic lights. it heat seized

As its oil was 10 miles away :)


It was sold with a RIGID engine
And a Brand new sump pan

WHY..?? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I just fitted a ยฃ100 used engine and drove it for years (y)
 
My old Uno's, all went faster and got improved Mpg. The more they rusted and even once a large part of the floor (Complete with the off/side lower seat rail) fell onto the m9 coming back from the motorcycle racing at Knockhill.

So I put one or more of my long spanners in the hole (broadside across) and drove back to Glasgow.

Lost my breakfast that day, emptied all over my underpants๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
PPS. Had to jack the floor (or what remained) up with my trolly jack, then slip the spanners under the rail๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Funny thing is I just had a core plug go on a Fiat 1.2

The other side (alternator)

The plug not corroded but the metal has split

Just about doable with just the engine mount and covers removed
