I have a 2002 Fiat Palio el 1.2. I have had problems with my car over heating. I have changed the water pump and thermostat, flushed the radiator and water hoses and replaced the radiator. When the car is cold and the temp gauge is just above cold, the heater in the car works beautifully. Sometimes the temp gauge goes right up to 3/4. When this happens, the heater temp goes cold. The radiator is cold and the water hoses are hot. I have primed the water cooling system on the 3 prime screws located on the water hose system. and the one on the radiator. I have been told that perhaps its the head gasket. Are there any other possibilities that could cause this. I wouldn't want to remove the head for no reason. Oh and it doesn't over heat everyday. Sometimes it will go a entire work week without doing anything. Please help.

Hi, and welcome to FF, :)
sounds as if you've done ALL of the logical things there, (y)
at times it sounds like an airlock..

the 1 BIG question. does it hold a steady coolant level,
or require topping-up ??,

Charlie

I decided to pull the head off. I found that the head gasket had not gone. What I did find was the water ports behind cylinders 1 & 4 on the head had corroded away to the point where the head gasket was no longer sealing around the cylinder. I sent the head in and had it welded up and skimmed the head, as well as had the valves re-seated. Replaced the valve stem seals at the same time. I put a new head gasket on, torqued the head correctly and have had no problem since.
