Hi All,
Needed some inputs.
My car overheated one fine day and suddenly there was smoke and stuff coming out of the engine.
I took it to the service center and they replaced the fan saying it was not working.
However, now when I take the car out for around 5-6 km.. the temperature reading goes up by a little above half of the total meter and then comes down.
It then again goes up by half and comes down. This looks scary as I dont remember this happening earlier. I remember the temperature reading always being at the quarter range.
Can someone please help me here.
I'm not able to use my car and the service guys are saying some stuff like its normal behavior. !!
Any reply would be appreciated.
Thanks & Regards,
Sharat

What is happening is the following,
the car gets to the hot level(say 90 deg)
then the fan comes on,cools it to the cold level (80deg)
and this repeats, check the temp sensors that control the fan

Thermostat is a weak point on 1.6-16V Palio's.
Put a new one on, together with fresh coolant.

I also think thermostat is not doing its job as it should and thats the reason maybe the high speed fan turns on at higher temp and then cools down engine
So its not kaput but malfunctioning

Otherwisr the working is same in my car as well which is a petra 1.6. Engine reaches a certain temp and then low or high speed fan turns on and brings the engine temp doen

Right now the detection point is when the temp gauge is exactly at half.
But i have also witnessed the erratic behaviour of the thermostat. Not long ago, the cycle of fan used to start when temp gauge was at 40 percent mark

With ac the temp gauge has constantly stays at around 25 percent mark

Try a simple check. Start the motor from cold and let it tick-over. Check the coolant around the engine warms up but the radiator stays cold. When the gauge gets to say a third the Thermostat should start to open and warm water will circulate around the radiator. Eventually, say at half on the gauge, the fan will kick in and cycle as #2 . If the fan kicks in and the radiator is cool give the thermostat housing a couple of sharp taps with a mallet, not a hammer, you might get lucky. Otherwise, as Peter says, new thermostat.

hi does any one know where the fan switch on a palio 1.6 weekender is ?
