Hi all, I am not sure if this has been asked as yet but after lots of searching I am unable to find anything similar.

I am from SA and I have a 2000 Fiat Palio 1.2 ed.

I had the car sent in for its service a last week, however before and even now after the service I have been experiencing the following on my palio:

- When I change gears and push in the clutch it seems that the rpms does not go down as it is supposed to.

- When I stop at a stop / traffic light for instance and the car is supposed to idle, as soon as I push in the clutch and brake, the revs shoot up as well and it sounds like I am pressing in the petrol and trying to rev the car.

Has anybody had this before and can perhaps make some suggestions as to what might be the problem?

I know nothing about cars and I would like to try and find a possible cause for this before taking it to a mechanic who from experience try to charge you for all kinds of unneccesary things...

I would really appreciate any assistance here please...

Regards

Good day machielr.

I had the same problem that you have.

I installed a vacuum gauge in my Palio and while fitting it i noticed that the vacuum pipe that runs between the ecu and the inlet manifold is sitting loose (well not a tight as i would like it).

I thought that the vacuum pipe is leaking.

If you car is showing the problem on idle.Push the brake pedal in and out a few times(pushing hard). If i did it my car the revs picked up more and more untill it reached 5000rpm.
That got me thinking that the vacuum might be leaking as your brakes work on your vacuum when the car is on.

So I replace the vacuum pipe with a normal petrol pipe.

Haven't got the problem again since then.

The fiat dealers can't seem to find the cause of the problem so it doesn't help to ask them.

Let me know if you don't understand what I meant and I will send you photos of the pipe and location of it.

Hi Paulsmit

Thank you for the quick reply.

As stated I do not know anything about cars so pictures will definitely help me out thank you.

Someone also suggested that my accellerator cable might be getting stuck, so I bought a new cable as well (seeing that I have driven the car now for 3 years and not sure when it was replaced by the previous owner i though it might be a good idea to do it anyway)....

If you can send me those pictures, then I can at least look at the vacuum pipe as well and can give feedback on the progress soon.

you can send the pics to me @ [email protected]

Thanks in advance

Hi.

Fait also told me throttle cable.Witch was strange as my car then had only 4000km on.

Will send you photos as soon as I can.

Im willing to put money on it that its not you throttle cable. If it was stuck it will rev and keep on revving until the valves dance on the hood.

And if you turn your car off and start it again it will idle normal(thats what mine did.)

Greetings
P

Well, when it did rev like that, I put my foot underneath the petrol paddle and pulled it back a bit and it would idle normal again.

I did change the cable yesterday afternoon and drove to work this morning without any issues, however will keep an eye on it.

Will also still be looking into the suggestions you made.

thank you very much.

Hi PaulSmit

Any progress on those photos yet?

Can you perhaps also send me a photo of your gearbox as I saw something weird and just want to look at another palio's gearbox to see if it is the same....
