since the last few months, i can hear a weird rattle from the engine bay. it is a mild rattle, as if something is loose / rattling in a hollow enclosure.

i thought it was the Clutch Release Bearing / Throw-out bearing - got it changed. Also changed the Timing Belt along with the aux belts.

the sound comes randomly and is not continuous at idle.

if i press the clutch all the way down, the sound stops and comes back if i let go of the clutch. Again, if i rev the car from 850 +/- to about 1000 RPM, the sound goes away and again comes back. but like i said - it does not occur always - be it at cold start or when the engine is warmed up

if i look in the engine bay - it seems the sound is coming from the Left Hand Side (LHS) of the engine bay (with you facing the engine bay) - from somewhere down / towards the fire wall. but it is hard to point to the exact location with the engine running. and to add more to the frustration, when i took it to the mechanic, the sound / rattle didn't occur at all :bang: Engine mount / bed was found OK when the clutch release bearing was worked upon

Any pointers. Thanks in advance.

a very stupid question: is the timing belt bearings (tensioner / fixed) related connected to this problem?

Sounds are very difficult to comment on, when you are not hearing it yourself.
The way you are describing it, sounds exactly what my Fiorino does for more than 10 years now!
I heard many theories by many so called experts, but the car runs fine for almost 300.000 km's now, so I don't worry (anymore..!!)

Thanks.
The sound is irritating, not alarming.
I changed my clutch about 3 years ago, hoping that the sound would disappear, and it did.....for one week, than it returned, I don't pay much attention on it anymore, it's just part of my car....:)

You can read in the article that play in the actuator shaft may cause this sound, I believe it's true, but because it is no sign of big problems to come, I just leave it as it is.
When the sound appears, I just pres the clutchpedal once or twice, and it disappears in most cases.
I have learned to live with it!

Btw, the article is written by Valeo, all Fiat clutches are Valeo, the replacement clutch in my car is Valeo as well....!

Yup, Peter! i know it is by Valeo :) - the temporary solution is indeed depressing the clutch couple of times / a high rev drive - but it is very Irritating.

Will keep you updated if i find some solution :)

Take care.

I think you have got it right. Releaser bearing noise is heard in neutral position and at a low RPM.

You are also spot on when you mentioned that with a new clutch, noise disappears. That is because the clutch and the bearing are replaced together normally.

If the noise is profound when the vehicle is on a rough surface, some times the noise could be misleading.

As a simple test, get the brake caliper pin cleaned and tighten the silencer tail end nut. noise may vanish with this sometimes.

i doubt if it is the Clutch Release Bearing because i got it changed couple of weeks back. it was there before i got the CRB changed.
The sound comes from the engine bay for sure. Tail pipe nuts are ok IMO.

one more thing - the intensity (hope i am using the right word) of the sound increases / decreases when i switch on / off headlights :(

Irritating for sure.

Also

a very stupid question: is the timing belt bearings (tensioner / fixed) related connected to this problem?

Peter thanks again.

What can be done to the play between the actuator shaft and the release bearing? do you have any link where i can read about how the entire thing works (with diagrams)?

Take care, Peter :)

input shaft bearing could be a possibility then, wherever it is located in my car. also can this lead to sputter/bad timing but becomes OK if clutch is pressed?

what are the signs of this input shaft going bad, other than the rattle? again, is the cluth operation any way related / connected to the timing belt / bearing? this techical things are totally goin over my head.
