Punto MK2 power steering

Hi guys,

Bought a 2001 Punto for my daughter to learn in 6 weeks ago & like many others the power steering has failed, heavy steering with warning light on. The more I read the more confused I'm getting, no mechanic as you can tell. I've tried recharging the battery as this had gone flat and checked the fuse. Just need some good advice as to getting her back on the road asap without costing a fortune. If I was to buy a reconditioned unit with guarantee would this be the fix or would I need to take it into a main dealer first to get a fault code.
I'd be grateful for any not too technical help.

Re: Punto MK2 power steering

You'd get more help posting in the punto section lol.

A reconditioned or second hand steering column is needed to fix the problem can be 50 - 250. Beware of buying a second hand one as these sometimes don't work. A recon one is more expensive but usually has a guarantee.

a novice should be able to swap the steering column over in about 3 hours, pro prob takes an hour. using the haynes manual, its isn't as difficult as it seems

a brand new column will need calibrating but usually the second hand ones don't

hope this helps, nathan

1) there is a sequence for tightening column mounting bolts

If light is on IT WILL NOT WORK...need to go to Fiat garage to get it reset/repaired.

i got quoted 60 to get it fitted. however im going to do it myself. got a haynes manual and when i first looked at it i was like wtf looks well hard. but looking at it properly it looks quite easy. just looks harder because in the manual it says like remove airbag as described in section 12. then remove steering wheel section 10. remove....... section .......
just a lot of going back threw diffrent sections and then going to others. that wat makes it look tricky.
youd be better off getting a haynes manual.
plus 180 is a rip off so try other garages also. its not a big big job, just a lot of messing about and fiddling.
