Hi there

I am new to FIAT, I purchased a Palio 1999 for one week ago..... it drew perfectly, but then it all ended.... the engine was totally weird no tourqe, detornations and so on.... I checked the ignition, the injection and then thought it was the computer..... So I had to visit FIAT so they could measure it... but NO errors.

It turned out that the gasket was blown between cylinder 1 and 2 :-(

I decided to change it my self, I have done this before on other cars. I purchased the gaskets and a new timingbelt.

I removed the top without setting it to TDC..... but when putting it together 1. I aligned the crankshaft to the marks
2. I aligned the camshaft to the marks
3. I set the piston 1 to TDC

Then I reassempled the engine, and thought all was well.... but NO

The engine backfires, and it sounds like there is some bad ignition timing.... but that is not adjustabl like in the good old days.

So I began to troubleshoot... fireing sequence is 1342.... and I have placed the ignition cables according to a Punto manual I purchased for the same purpose. In the manual it is shown that the sparks should be (seen from the front of the car) connected to 2314 so that should be fine

But when TDC, cam and crank are all in sync, the only part that could be out of sync is the ignition..... but how does the ignition get told where the piston is, who/what sends a signal to the computer to fire ignition plug on cylinder 1 etc? Is it the inductive feeler on the front of the engine neear the crankshaft belt wheel???

Any way I need to figure out what is wrong, so ANY help would be greatly appriciated.

wot engine or Palio model ? ok mate you say what sends a signal to the computer to fire ignition plug on cylinder 1 etc?

Engine management system engine sensor and there is one by the crankshaft sprocket a crank sensor :)

Its a Palio 75 1.2 liter 8 valve.

Regarding the sensor thats what I thought, when removing the crank pullyt I noticed a gap in the teeth, but there was NOT mention on how to refit the crank pully in the Haynes manual?? I placed it so the gap was next to the sensor when the engine was in TDC......
