I repaired a Fial 128 for my mate just before he decided to move to S. Africa. All I did was to decoke it and clean up the valves after adding a petrol filter in line. He decided not to pay me for my time but sold me the car instead for a small sum. I went everywhere that car and I kept it running on a shoestring by swapping worn out parts with less worn out parts for a nearby scrap yard. I was very keen in those days.

My mate's Fiat 128 was difficult to start and kept stopping. He asked me to fix it for a few quid and being interested in fixing cars I agreed. I decoked it and added an in line petrol filter and it was then ok. But he'd decided to move to S. Africa and didn't want the car so he sold it to me for a few quid. My family and I went everywhere in that car. Having run only old side valve cars up to then I was surprised by its performance. I'd never before got my hands on an OHC engine, either. All went well until one day I noticed a wheel bearing complaining. The price offered at CarSpares in Freezywater was for a complete hub and it wasn't cheap. So I decided to try to remove the bearing and replace it by itself and reuse the hub. It took a forge, a lathe and a 3 ton press to remove the bearing but I managed it and replaced it in the hub, together with the thick circlip. Following the original hub's manufacture pattern I swaged over the edge of the hub to hold the bearing in even more securely and put the hub on the car. The wheel then fell off! The circlip and the bearing had come out! There's a lesson in that somewhere.
