I think it's probably quite important to differentiate between a light entertainment programme featuring three middle aged blokes who just like a good laugh and a factual motoring documentary.

Personally, thinking back to the old Top Gear and Wheelbase, it's dad, as presented by the likes of Noel Edmonds, Judith Chalmers, William Woollard, Cliff Michelmore, Angela Ripon and Gordon Wilkins. As a format, it might have worked when I watched it as a kid, but we've moved on since the '50s and, as you can't really read a car magazine in an hour, the amount of factual information you can get in a TV programme of that length is severly limited.

The current programme is shown on (about) 23 overseas TV stations as well as a number of foreign BBC broadcasters and have spawned 16 compilation CDs so they must be doing something right.
