Question Scooter running really rough / no power

Just went and bought a new scooter (well, 2nd hand) - though it was tipping it down with rain when I did, so couldn't really test it.

It seemed fine - and the dealership said it's fully guaranteed for a year, so if anything at all goes wrong they would fix it - so I bought it.

It's stopped raining now and I finally got to take it out for a real drive and it's pretty awful It has hardly any power at all, drives really rough (like stuttering a bit) and has real trouble going over 60kph.

I'll take it back to the garage on Tuesday - but if anyone had an idea what it might be it would be useful, as if it's not too expensive, I could just get a local garage to sort it (save me a long drive)....

It's a 180cc - so I'm pretty sure it should be easily able to get up a hill with a passenger without any problems!

Re: Scooter running really rough / no power

60 is nothing here, my gf's 100cc can get to 80 easily.

Top speed is rated at 130, so something is def not right.

By stuttering, I guess I mean kangraooing - but it doesn't feel like a clutch issue.

Re: Scooter running really rough / no power

Plugs are dirt cheap
Check its sparking as it should

Next Check No kinks in fue lines - fuel present

Air fitler blocked?
Fuel filter gunged up?

Does it improve once warm - remain same though out?

Failing no problems with plugs or fuel to air delivery
Compression Test

is it a 2 stroke or a 4stroke?

Ziggy

Re: Scooter running really rough / no power

I just downloaded the manual to see how to do the sparkplug, but it's all in Chinese - be a few more months at least until I can understand that ... ha.

It had been standing for a year or so they said before I got it, so I guess it could be bunged up things - I wouldn't know how to check that either though...

It's a 4 stroke - and no, doesn't get better when warm - seems like it might even get worse

If I can get a decent translation of all those terms by tonight, I'll stop by the local garage, else I guess it's going back.

If it did turn out to be a compression problem and needed the engine stripped to fix it - how long are we looking at that taking? If I drive it there, I'll need it back the same day, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get home ....

Re: Scooter running really rough / no power

Ha - went out this morning, fired it up - tried to move ... not happening...

Waited a bit, tried again and it moved, but hardly - then died.

Garage is picking it up tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure it's not the clutch - when I mean "it didn't move" - the engine didn't rev or anything, it just did nothing.

As for Chinese, they'd be angry with you if you said that! There are 3 main manufacturers of scooter out here: Sym, Kymco and Yamaha with Yamaha being the least favourite as they (ironically) break down the most.

I don't think I've ever seen a Honda. A couple of Suzuki and even fewer Piaggio.

It's one of these:

heh my honda bike was bought brand new by grandad back in 1979. it still runs today and has never needed any part replaceing.. well chain, sprockets and tyres.

Honda MT-50 50cc 2 stroke. its done just over 24k miles and still starts up first kick after being stored for months.

im a honda man when it comes to bikes heh

Re: Scooter running really rough / no power

GF is on the way back from the garage with it now.

She says they adjusted some screw (or something) - running too lean/rich?

Re: Scooter running really rough / no power

Is it a carby engine? They could have adjusted the air/fuel mix. Or they could have given her a dud steer and just made it run long enough to get home

You should have bought a Kymco, one of my mates has a dealership here and they seem to be a good bit of kit.
