renault laguna steering rack

my mum has got a renault laguna

and the rack has gone....so me and my dad took to trying to fix it...but couldnt get the return pipe off for the power steering fluid....if it helps it is a 1999 1.9dti i think....any speckle techniques i should know about except a lighter?
its just impossible to get a spanner on it and actually get it turning without kinking the pipe....french engineering at its best
