Hi, All fixing my friends ford escort up and found a fault in the speedo needle sometimes goes wobbly but cant find a site that anygood at finding an answer to why it doing it anyone know why or anywhere i can find the answer the the problem.

if its a cable driven speedo then probably a worn cable

could be damp on the sender from the gear box/ drive shaft IMMSMC my old fiesta used to do it in the wet

Hi, All

I was wondering if could be the actual dash speedo unit. Was thinking of swaping it for other one do you think it would be better to change the wire how hard would this be to do.

My old escort did the same thing. It was the gearbox that had the problem. End of the speedo cable that went into the gearbox had a square end and the hole in the gearbox it fitted into had rounded off.

i had the same problem on an escort, it was followed by gearbox failure. a a common problem is the nylon gear for the speedo cable drive gets chewed up and then it contaminates the box. i dont know how a few bits of nylon could kill my gearbox but they did and it was a great noise, BANG!

its better to use a big ford forum instead of an escort forum, for several reasons, but mostly because escort forums are full of chavs whereas a ford fourm will have more of the older wiser ford lovers, probably still owning sierras and talking about the merits of mechanical fuel injection.
