The wrong forum I know, but meh :p Recently changed jobs and although I'm earning a lot more, the drive is much further and the starbo drinks petrol. So thinking of hanging up my boy racer gloves and getting a diesel, been looking at these and quite like them, anyone got any experiences of these cars etc..??

cheers.

Whoever said getting a diesel meant hanging up your boyracer gloves? :D Get one, get a remap and kick some boyracer butt ;)

quite possibly its the end of my modding career lol, I just cba with it anymore, I may have grown up? :O lol

ibiza FR is a great car, much better than a polo imo. i havent driven the FR yet but sitting it one felt good. the 1.2 drives very nicely for a bottom of the range car so i'm sure the FR will be great. plus they hold value fairly well.

i think seat deserve their success, they have styling as good as Fiat, engineering as good as VW and the reliability of Honda, all in a package thats competitively priced. thats hard to fault.

I went down to the SEAT garage today, none in stock yet but they will let me know when they have them in and can test drive one etc... I can't wait to see it lol, I've been in the older shape Ibiza Cupra and they were lovely inside, so comfy it was unbelievable!

Friend has the TDi 100 (I am about to drive it to Moutauban in France with him) - it's ok, I wouldn't call it special. His reliability has been "so so" - it used 4 litres of oil in the first 2,000 miles but doesn't burn any anymore. When returned to SEAT they looked into it and 1litre/500miles is their maximum run in tolerance! He has the normal problems, condensation in the headlights, poorly fitted glovebox.

Another 'friend' has the same issues and 2 recirculation motors in the last 6 months. Both of these cars were bought brand new.

A further friend of a friend has the same issues of crap glovebox and condensation in the headlights, not sure on the age of that. SEAT have a fix for the condensation problem, they drill a hole in the headlight.

Rear headroom is very good.

Been in the cupr TDi and loved it.

Great performance and 60 mpg. 6 Gears for long motorways is fantastic!

The FR remapped will have similar performance (slightly better actually) to a standard cupra, just not the brakes or suspension to match.

I've had the 1.9 PD130 engine in a Fabia. Its unrefined compared to the newer 2.0 TDI but is punchy. Makes you think you're going faster than you are. Remaps take them to 170-180bhp but 182's Cooper S's will still get past. Good engines imo. Dont know about the Ibiza though, heard the suspensions a bit firm...

thats the thing, I don't know if I'm going to miss the power of the starlet, cos atm 182's and CooperS' are no problem :(

I've got a Leon FR+ TDI, granted it's a 150bhp but they're almost identical engines. I'd expect them to perform similar too; less power but smaller lighter car. Not had any problems since I've had mine. On real roads, real situations and short blasts along short straights even a standard one will give a Clio 172/182, Mini Cooper S and even CTR's a run for their money. Definately a different story on a track, country roads or motorways though. But from 30 to 50 or even 70mph speed limit change, the TDI will shine through the soot and leave them wondering what's going on!:D

I'm getting mine remapped in a couple of weeks, approx 195bhp and 300lb/ft (standard clutches can't handle more torque and an uprated one is approx £700...). A mate has a remapped 150 TDI Leon and another has a standard Cupra R 225bhp and the Cupra R has a real headache trying to shake the TDI up to about 130mph.(y)

Have a look on www.seatcupra.net - loads of info on there!(y)

If I were you, I'd go for either the Ibiza FR 1.8T 150 or the Cupra 1.8T 180. When I had my Fabia I thought diesels were the be all and end all, which they are up to a point (good fuel economy and decent performance) but they get a bit boring and I got bored of mine just under two years after I got it. They'll never match the petrols for fun and performance and with you having that Starlet, I reckon you'll be a bit disappointed.

Yawn......

:p

:yeahthat:

The FR and Cupra Ibizas have done more for diesel hatches than pretty much any other car. The Skoda VRS is good, but still too much for people like me. The 130 sport (same as FR just less chrome bits and a bit older) Ibiza can be mapped to more than a standard Cupra TDi and will give most cars in its class a damn good run (dont just look at 0-60, in gear times for TDis are fantastic.)

i have to disagree with this

i drive a fabia vrs daily and i find it lovely to drive! and very quick too without a remap! and thats coming from a 200bhp UT owner! not boring at all, and wipes the floor with alot of hot hatches thru the gears. would love to get it remapped!

id get a fabia vrs instead of the seat IMO

Dunc

The dervs are the same engine, and while people argue their side of the court over the quality, I can say they are not leagues apart.

So really it comes down to

A) how many doors you want
B) What car you like the look of
C) The better car is the seat

If you want decent performance aswell as the fuel economy the best way is to compromise with a diesel. I had to do that when I was 19, due to insurance costs... Thats another thing in favour of these quick diesel hatches.

If you dont mind seeing the fuel gauge go down when you boot it, but getting proper performance and having more fun - stay with a petrol.

Im only speaking from experience! ;) Mine wasnt standard - remapped/turbo back exhaust/induction mods/suspension mods... and a Mini Cooper S was quicker from a standing start, round a roundabout (obviously) and accelerating off a roundabout.
