I am new to the forum but have used it for advice on any issues that I have had previously.

I am about to do a basic oil change, is it wise to change the sump plug every time the oil is changed, even if the plug is in good order or should I just change the washer.

If the plug is to be changed, are all plugs the same fit or does it need to be model specific?

Thanks....

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

If the plug is "in good order", then it does not need to be replaced with a new one. The only time it would need replacing is if the hexagon was so badly worn that you suspected it would be difficult to remove next time.

Fiat specify that the washer should be replace every time, however, I've had one of my Stilo JTDs for over 9 years; change the oil and filter at least once a year, and have never used a new washer. I would only use a new one if the original was obviously damaged.

As the JTD engine oil filter is so small, it's important to change it with every oil change.

Thanks for the reply, how much oil is needed when the new filter is fitted, I have read around 4.7 litres, would this be correct?

Thanks again

I was taught to renew the washer at every oil and filter change. I am Renault trained.
It is a good idea to replace the seal washer if you have a new one and tighten the plug to the correct torque. This pretty much ensures no leak from plug.
Having said the above if it's a copper washer that hasn't been over tightened in the past I anneal it then reuse.
