Hi
Just bought a 1999 Barchetta and have now joined the club.
I have a problem with my speedometer.
The kilometer counter works OK, but the MPH will only register up to 50.
Anyone got any ideas.
Thanks.

Hi, and welcome, :)

speedo's tend to be driven at the gearbox, then the signal sent electrically to the speedo head in dash

either the sender is patch.. or it's an issue with the head,

 try using a sat-nav at say 60 / 70 mph

does the odometer also read as if only 50mph is achieved..?

compare distances with sat-nav;)

the g-box sender is PROBABLY common to other FIAT's and therefore a LOT less grief to change as an experiment

( pretty sure a lot of the kit is the same as HGT Punto)

Hi
Thanks
I will look at the gearbox sender first.
The speedo registers from 0 and increases OK up to 50 then seems to get stuck. Then as I decrease speed and get below 50 it works OK decreasing to 0.
Hopefully it is the gearbox sender.
Where on the gearbox would I find it?
Thanks

I agree that a cracked solder joint (a common problem on the B) might be the cause, but more typically, doesn't it stop the speedo from working altogether? It's hard to see how a cracked solder joint would be sensitive to speed, to the extent that the speedo routinely stops working once you hit 50, and starts again once your speed drops below 50. Very puzzling. It's not something simple, is it, like some foreign body in there, physically preventing the speedo needle from rotating beyond 50?

Hence the suggestion of seeing if the odometer is similarly effected. ;)

The solder joints are crap in barchettas on speedos!
I have had 2 speedos fail on me...

It's a notarious problem for barchettas and it's nothing more than dried out /cracked solder joints in the speedo unit itself.

No they fail exactly like that, I can guarantee that there isn't any other problem!

Have same problem, speedo sometimes just doesn't work. Can wake up in the middle of the drive, then die again after short stop.
Tapping never helps. Nothing seem to help, just wait and hope and it will eventually be back.

Resoldered all big joints a year ago, also changed speed sensor - still there

Mine always stops working when the car's been parked in the sun. Classic symptom of a cracked solder joint opening up due to heat expansion. It used to bother me, but now I just calculate my speed from the tacho. That way, I get to practise my mental arithmetic while driving, in an attempt (probably fruitless) to stave off premature senility. (y)

Well, I could roughly tell my speed by how wide my grin would be, with "ear to ear" being around 150kph. But for city speeds, I need something more precise. And yes, I am senile and can't remember the tacho-to-speedo ratios :D

My speedo also stops at 80km , 50mph and if I push it and pull it about a bit it usually starts working again and goes up to the speed I'm actually doing but sometimes falls back again. so probably is a solder joint.
