Hi Guys,
I'm the new guy on the block. I've got a 1983 Super Mirafiori 2litre twin cam, 5 spd box etc.

Hope to get to know a few of you along the way.

Got a question though. A week ago I found about 2 litres of fuel in the sump in the oil. I haven't had this car for long so I'm looking on the manual for all possibilites. I've talked to a couple of mechanics but still not sure what the problem could be. Could it be in the "fuel vapour reticulation system"? Also wondered if the electric fuel pump might have pressurised the needle and seat while the car was turned off?

Can anyone help??:):)

Usual cause of this is a leaking diaphragm in a mechanical fuel pump. Yet, you mention an electric pump. Are you guessing, or is it a fuel injection model?

If there's no mechanical pump, then options are:
Excess fuel is being injected while driving, in which case the bore wear is likely to be horrendous if that much fuel has washed the oil off the bores. Injectors should remain closed once engine is off.
Carburettor flooding. As above, oil wash is a likely issue. Unless fuel pump is running with engine off. Needs checking.

Thanks for the help. The car is a 2 litre 131 with electric fuel pump standard. I talked to a carby mechanic and he thinks that the replacement fuel pump I've installed 6 months ago might be the trouble. the old one malfunctioned so i bought one recommended by Guy Croft as I'm installing twin Webbers soon.
The new pump's pressure is 4-6psi and the standard one might be less. it seems that this fuel in the sump might have happened after the car was turned off.

Hope that makes sense:):)

An electric pump at the rear of the car should deliver more pressure than one at the front, which would need to suck more. (Used to be a problem in the sixties and seventies with SU electric pumps)

Carbs, I seem to remember, expect only about 4psi max, or the float needle may not cope, and be pushed off its seat, causing flooding. Might need a pressure regulator fitting in the line.

Hi guys, need some help locating the engine number on a 1981 131 Super Mirafiori 1600TC, had a good look round the block and struggling to find any numbers:cry: can anyone help in telling where it should be

it's a running car and apparently the number is just above bell housing on the block which is pretty much impossible to check short of either removing engine or gearbox

Photo's please.

I had one of these back in 1982. Light Blue in colour but also a lot of brown colouring along the doors etc. Shame really as it was a great car.

just in case someone has the same problem and reads this post/thread, the engine number is actually stamped on a flat machined part of the block just to the right of the oil filter housing and immediately above the engine mount bracket that's bolted to block, many thanks to member F123C for pointing me to the correct area to look at(y)
