Hello

I have just bought a 2016 fiat 500 lounge with delivery miles only (6)

I have now done 260 miles and my petrol light has just come on :-(.

It seemed to take ages to even move from full but over the last 2 days it has rapidly gone down, over half a tank to do about 130 miles - these have mainly been on the motorway as I travel a bit for work whereas the ones in the first 4 days where just local bobbing about.

Is this normal or am I just a really inefficient driver?? This doesn't feel right but I have no idea hoe much it took to fill the tank as the garage did it - worried that this is excessive.

Also while I'm here I cannot get my text messages through to it - it says in th manual that is the phone is not compatible the symbol will be greyed out but it is clearly visible, anyone offer any solutions?

Thanks

check the fuel consumption level on the dash, tell us your engine, and we'll tell you how efficient you are = )

A full tank isnt big in the Fiat, about 35-40 liters depending on how much you fill it up from empty. 40 liters + is basically letting it spill out the tank, my record is 41.8 liters at a basically empty tank

its a 1.2 engine

Hi, and welcome,

260 for light to come on -so @320 on a 40 litre fill = @36 mpg..,
not awful on a brand new tight engine .. in a car you are only just getting used to.

I know somebody who thinks their 500 is poor on fuel - because their last car was filled half as often,
but it cost £100 to fill - the 500 is half that..

the tank is "tapered" too ,

texts only work on "windows phones" ,
my android is fine for calls - (but no text reader)

Press the button on the end of the right stalk until you get average consumption A @36mpg on a new engine not bad our 1.2 60k+ is showing 48-50 even when "empty" it's about 5-8L left ,think 32l is as much as I've put in ,tank is 39l book says

The cars economy does get better, my 2100 mile series 4 lounge (1.2 engine) does about 50 mpg driving around 15 miles each way to work.

The text messages do work with iPhones, but you need to go into the Bluetooth settings of the phone and select the cars connectivity and then 'show notifications'.

It depends very much on where you live and how fast you go.
We have a 85TA and best consumption is 52mpg and worst is 34mpg.

Long steep hills and tight corners like we have round here, are a killer for fuel consumption.

Regards,
Mick.

I found on my last car the first "half" of the tank seemed to last for ages but the 2nd "half" went down quicker. I think it's just to do with the shape of the tank. 250 miles per tank in a 500 sounds OK to me though.

Think we got 283 at the point the light came on,
Just to say even though your car is new you should, as good practice fill up before the light comes on.
Our Mazda when the gauge gets down to 3/4 full its actually half empty, at a 1/4 tank its basically empty.

Yep the gauge ain't linear, I get 300 to 350 per tank on my TA, generally fill up while still on 2 bars and the odd beep so still a fair bit left, 48 to 50 mpg typically on the trip

Every car does this as the 'first half' of the gauge includes the filler neck. If you stopped filling when the gauge read 'full' you'd find both halves much more equal.

To save your left eardrum (on a RHD car).

Ladykitching emits a constant stream of high pitched wailing gibberish every time I try to go anywhere with the low fuel light illuminated .

The volume increases at least tenfold if I try to pass an open petrol station with the fuel light lit, irrespective of the price of the fuel.

(The 500 is good for about 70 miles from the time the warning light first illuminates).

speaking of that I am currently on the final bar on the fuel gauge low fuel warning. Will fill up tomorrow.

On level ground, yes.
If going up and down hills, not necessarily.

The fuel gauge is at the rear of the tank, so when going up hills, you have (indicated) less fuel than you actually have. This is especially bad when pulling away up a steep hill. Also, going up hills uses more fuel, so it's a double whammy.

We can get the fuel light on when going up our 1in4 lane when the tank isn't nearly empty.

Recently, our fuel light came on as we left home, and then went out again when cruising along at the top on the level(ish). The range readout said we had 120miles and the light didn't come on again during our trip.

Regards,
Mick.

Have you not heard of duct tape? To cover the light of course, what were you thinking?

70 extra miles on a tank works out to four extra stops a year (average AU mileage).

We've just come back from a week's holiday in the Lake District (along with our zippy new 500 Lounge 105), and on the way there it rewarded us with 58 mpg by the time we left the m'way. The town and country roads knocked it back down to 51 mpg by our arrival at our cottage. On the way back we got 50.4 mpg. not bad at all, as I was giving it some stick along some sections of the trip.

Very happy with this little car so far.

those are indeed good figures..(y) from a 2 cylinder engine(875cc);)

for clarity - the OP sueskelly has a 4 cylinder (1242cc):)

Funnily enough, the figures are more or less identical to our previous car, a Suzuki Swift Sport (1.6l, 4 cyl, 136 HP).
Driving the 2-cyl is odd. The temptation is to rev it too high, especially at pull-away or going uphill, as the engine note sounds much lower than a 4-cyl. Often it tells me to change up when I'm thinking it could do with a lower gear!
How do you find the 1.2 litre 500? I've heard lots of grumbles about lack of power, but they seem popular and capable.
