Engine cuts out when warm and starts again after few mins, suspected crank sensor. Sometimes when starting loud noises from engine and lots of black smoke, would appreciate any ideas as to what this is, multipla jtd

I have only recently got my Multipla JTD, but have just had this problem (well, mine didn't cut out, just refused to start), is a common problem on these engines it seems. Having read alot of posts here the last few days it seems that the common symptom is cutting out and then refusing to start accompanied by the engine light and 'engine control faulty' on the lcd. Then after 10-15 mins it starts. Havent seen anything about black smoke accompanying it.
Best thing to do is plug it into a computer to get the fault code. You can get an ELM 327 cable off ebay for £13 (from UK) and then download the multiecuscan program for free from http://www.multiecuscan.net/ read the instructions as you need to change the settings to the type of cable you are using.
have a look at the other recent post 'engine management fault' here in the multipla section for more info and a link on how to change the crankshaft sensor.

Crank sensor can stop working when hot and then start working again once cooled down. The sensor resistance changes causing weak signal output. Not sure about the black smoke but I'd check the egr valve first for the black smoke.

Probably it's defect of a thermal valve at engine.
It's sufficient to change this valve.
