Just logging in as first timer. recently bought a Multipla - silver covered with stick on Daisys for a road trip to Cornwall with my daughter riding shotgun. Everyone took the mickey and said we would never make it! 2000 miles later in 4 days and looking good ........... until the gearbox started playing up! A further 1000 miles and gearbox decides whether to play on a daily basis. Only sad as didn't want naysayers to be right! We love the car but at £500 to buy and a garage quoting £400 to have a look it seems Daisys days are numbered. So is this a job for a non mechanic to try or is it time to stick on e bay for someone more competent! Ho hum - Hang in there Daisy!

What makes you think it is the gearbox? You haven't provided any of the associated symptoms. These cars have their fair share of common clutch gremlins. Tell us what it is doing and maybe we can help you.

Hi there its a 1.9 Diesel. symptoms were suddenly would not engage reverse, after many attempts turned off engine put it in reverse and started car - all worked no problems. From then it has now got to the stage where sometimes you can engage gears sometimes you can't and this applies throughout all gears, changing up or down. but bizarrely sometimes the car just drives normally

Hi,
I'd suspect that the gearchange cables are NOT keeping their relationship with the body relative to the gearbox,
either wear in the gearchange mechanism..or just as likely worn engine gearbox mounts

the fact it'll change with engine OFF ( sat in a "neutral" position in the engine bay)

makes sense.

I would start with the clutch system. I suspect you have an air leak in the master/slave system. I further suspect the original owner bleed it before selling it to you which would explain why it worked for the first 2000 miles. Do a search on this forum for clutch bleeding and you will find how to do it. The fact that you can engage gears with the car off points to what I am saying.

Seems to be more intermittent than that 'glowplug'.
Eccles says that the box would operate normally sometimes, which, whilst I'd agree that it suggests clutch, could a set of sticky cables.
My last bug (#5) came with self same problem, I got a can of spray 'DUCK OIL' and with my brother wiggling the stick sprayed it into every nook and cranny, I went overboard and used the entire can, but it did the trick, I had to go thru the box 1,2,3,4,5+R, then up and down for the next ten minutes , but it progressively easer. Now, some 3 months later it hasn't been anything but slick.
I can only hope that Eccles has similar fortune, but it really sounds nothing more than a lack of basic maintenance.
Good luck Eccles,
George
